How Bring It! is changing our perception of Black girls and performance

With another season of Lifetime’s show Bring It! behind us, I can’t help but reflect on all the ways in which the show adds nuance to media portrayal of Black girls. The fairly new reality show follows the competition season of a black majorette/dance team — the Dancing Dolls from Jackson, Mississippi. An alternative to the popular show Dance Moms, which focuses on the early careers of individual dancers and the moms who push them, Bring It! highlights the commitment that Black girls have made to dance as a hobby (and in some cases as a career) via the Dancing Dolls. The stories of the dancers, the coach Ms. Diana, and select ...

Chart of the Day: The pay gap for women of color

Earlier this week we got the terribly exciting news that, according to the latest Census numbers, the average American woman now makes 78 cents, instead of 77 cents, to the average dude’s dollar. But, as we know, the gap–which hasn’t improved in a decade–varies a lot by race.

Here’s a chart from ThinkProgress showing how the wages of women of different races compare to those of white men:

Quote of the Day: “My past is littered with the bones of men…”

She said she was all too aware that if she was selected, she would represent several hundred male athletes in the N.B.A.; she would deal with league officials and agents who were nearly all men; she would negotiate with team owners who were almost all men; and she would stand before reporters who were predominantly men.

She did not flinch.  “My past,” she told the room, “is littered with the bones of men who were foolish enough to think I was someone they could sleep on.”

Meet the new head of the NBA players union, Michele A. Roberts. A former public defender, Roberts will be the first female leader of a major North American professional sports union.

Chart of the Day: When does a woman owe you sex?

Apparently, there’s an emerging trend of dudes tracking when their partners refuse sex and whining about the “excuses” they use. Hoping to nip this one in the bud, Elizabeth Plank and Raquel Reichard put together a helpful chart to help you determine when a woman owes you sex:

Summer box office numbers down as Hollywood continues to ignore female moviegoers

Oops, it seems Hollywood’s stubborn refusal to cater to female movie-goers may be hurting the bottom line. Summer box office numbers are way down–resulting in a 20 percent decline in revenue in North America–this year, and it could be because Hollywood is still making crap targeted at the long-coveted young dude demographic when they’re going to the theater less and women have become a more reliable audience.

According to data from the Motion Picture Association of America, the young male demographic that most big Hollywood movies are aimed at is making fewer trips to the theater and hurting box-office totals. Who is spending money at the movies? Women, and movies aimed at women are reaping the benefits. ...

A comic on gender roles

In this great comic from The Robinhead, an alien is confronted with our culture’s strangely stubborn investment in the concept of a gender binary. As the poor confused creature notes, “What I’m not understanding, however, is why I feel hatred and anger coming off of you at the idea of anyone living outside of your imaginary boxes.” Great question.
