Supreme Court sides with pregnant workers in discrimination case

Women and minorities who face workplace discrimination or harassment ordinarily receive vital legal services from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). But in 2012, the EEOC cut this support in half without an adequate explanation. This unexplained drop-off hurts the most vulnerable employees; a large chunk of EEOC complaints deal with sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, and other gender discrimination issues. The drop-off especially affects low-income women who are less able to afford lawyers and more likely to turn to the EEOC for help when they’re mistreated at work.

Catholic Church says having to defend itself against discrimination claims is a violation of its religious freedom

The religious freedom claims just keep getting more and more ridiculous. In the latest, the Catholic Church is arguing that its religious liberty rights protect them from even having to go to court at all if they’re accused of discrimination. Walmart fires worker for becoming pregnant

For years, Walmart has taken heat–in the courts and the streets– for gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and a generally shitty record on worker rights. In the spring, the company made a half-assed attempt to be less awful by changing their policy to say pregnant workers may be eligible for a “reasonable accommodation” if they have “a temporary disability caused by pregnancy.”
