Though she lost her case, Ellen Pao put sexism in Silicon Valley on trial

I was on the edge of my blue, cushiony seat that I had squeezed through rows of observers to find. Journalists were tap-tapping away at their keyboards as they updated live blogs and churned out stories on deadline.

Supreme Court sides with pregnant workers in discrimination case

As you’ll recall, the Supreme Court has been hearing the pregnancy discrimination suit brought by Peggy Young. Yesterday, in a 6-3 decision, the court ruled in favor of the former UPS employee who was forced to take unpaid leave when she became pregnant.

Why isn’t the government protecting employees from discrimination?

Ed. note: This post was originally published on the Community site.

Women and minorities who face workplace discrimination or harassment ordinarily receive vital legal services from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In the spring, the company made a half-assed attempt to be less awful by changing their policy to say pregnant workers may be eligible for a “reasonable accommodation” if they have “a temporary disability caused by pregnancy.”

But former Walmart employee Candis Riggins was fired–and lost her home–thanks to her pregnancy. After Riggins landed in the hospital multiple times because she worked in maintenance and had to carry around toxic chemicals all day, she asked to be temporarily moved behind the cash register–a reasonable accommodation if I’ve ever ...
