The lessons we must learn from the Giffords shooting

As Eesha pointed out yesterday, Representative Gabby Giffords announced that she would step down in a moving video. This, of course, was just over a year after being shot, along with 11 others, six of whom died, by a man should never have had access to a gun. It was also nearly two years after Sarah Palin put Giffords in her crosshairs, “targeting” her for having voted for Obama’s healthcare plan.

And props to Eesha for alluding to how toxic gun-toting language, celebrated by so many on the right, contributes to tragic acts of violence such as these. Giffords, herself, warned, prophetically, that people

need to realize that the rhetoric and firing people up and, you know, ...

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returns to the House floor

In hands-down the only uplifting moment during last night’s debt ceiling vote, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House floor for the first time since she was shot earlier this year.

Giffords had been following the debt ceiling debate from her home in Arizona and, although her “yes” vote wasn’t ultimately needed to pass the bill, she said in a statement, “I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.”

Gabrielle Giffords released from the hospital

Some good news–Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who had been hospitalized after a near fatal gunshot wound to the head 5 months ago, was discharged from TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital. She will continue her daily rehabilitation along with around-the-clock home medical care, but according to her doctor’s she has recovered well and is steadily improving. It can sometimes be so hard to find the positive in such appalling and meaningless violence and tragedy, but her recovery is nothing short of a miracle, a team of dedicated doctors and a testament to her strength and courage.

Four months after the Tucson shooting, how is Gabrielle Giffords?

The news about Arizona Representative Gabrielle Gifford’s health has been kept pretty under raps since she suffered a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head in the Tucson shootings earlier this year. An article just published finally has extensive detail about her condition and her recovery.

Rep. Giffords is still months away from leaving the residential rehab facility where she’s currently housed. While her language ability continues to improve, her sentences are often slow and choppy. While many of us (and some in the media) hoped for a miraculous recovery, the reality depicted in this article is that it’s going to be a long slow road to recovery for Rep. Giffords.

Congresswoman Giffords is alive and well and tweeting photos of birthday cake

Yesterday was the birthday of astronaut Mark Kelly, husband to Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who is recovering in Texas after being shot in January. Kelly has a twin brother, Scott, who coincidentally also had a birthday yesterday. Giffords tweeted birthday wishes to both of them and thanked her hospital for the cake they gave her husband. “Happy Birthday @ShuttleCDRKelly & @StationCDRKelly! Thanks for the cake @houstonhospital,” Giffords tweeted, the first words she has spoken publicly since the shooting.

As always, we send nothing but good wishes to the congresswoman as she continues her apparently quite remarkable recovery. She’s an inspiration and I hope we’ll hear more from her very soon.

Also, that cake looks delicious.

Glenn Beck Promotes Compassion?

Representative Gabrielle Giffords is incredible; she is supposed to be released from the hospital on Friday, less than 2 weeks after suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Then she is going to Houston’s Institute for Rehabilitation and Research at Memorial Hermann hospital which specializes in brain injuries to continue to heal.

As time passes and the media mania slows down around the Tucson shootings, we are still left with this idea of “civility” in political discourse which reminds of the whole “post-racial America” that we are supposed to be experiencing in the age of Obama (more theory than practice). In this sense we are stuck with those who cant admit their own part in violent discourse. We ...

Three brave people to note from Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting

Photo via James Palka/AP

As we mourn for those lost and await the recovery of Gabrielle Giffords and others injured in Saturday’s horrific shooting, I thought it would be remiss to not recognize a few brave individuals in particular who were there on Saturday. In the midst of the shock and anger everyone is in from this violent act of hate, these people’s courage should remind us of the humanity and goodness that still exists in this country.

Daniel Hernandez, the 20-year old intern of Gabrielle Giffords (who is openly gay) was only on the job for five days before he potentially saved her life on Saturday. Having some experience in triage and training allowed him to ...
