TV news channels turn not actually controversial story into an excuse for transphobia

I am so sick of 24-hour news networks. Their insistence that every story be framed as controversial has led to some awful coverage of California’s new law requiring public schools to respect students’ gender identity, which we reported on yesterday. The law’s going to be a big deal in the lives of kids whose shot at academic success was limited by, say, not being able to find a place to change for gym. It’s an important but very basic fix, and there’s no reason for controversy or for folks who aren’t directly benefiting to care, besides being happy for the win. That is unless you’re a bigot. And in the land of 24 hour news, bigots get a great ...

We pardon Spitzer, but not sex workers.

Yesterday, “Guero,” a California prisoner held in solitary confinement, died. According to friends he was “strong, was a good person, a good soldier.” Reports regarding his participation (or lack thereof) in the current hunger strike vary.

Fox News host decries American men’s “wussification” after abusive Rutgers basketball coach is fired

Yesterday Rutgers University fired its men’s basketball coach, Mike Rice, after video surfaced of him abusing his players both physically and verbally. In addition to kicking, shoving, and pelting them with basketballs, he used homophobic slurs against them including the f-word. After the video went viral, Rice was quick to apologize for the shameful behavior he had obviously been exhibiting remorselessly and with great vigor for years, but it was too little too late. His swift removal from the post was a victory against abuse in college sports, where student athletes already bear a ton of responsibility and pressure, for which many argue they are under-compensatedt.

Except that Fox News host Eric Bolling doesn’t view this as a positive development, apparently. ...

Fox news weight “expert” says Kelly Clarkson and Adele need to lose weight

No, seriously–it’s bad enough that Fox News wasted a segment on Adele and Kelly Clarkson’s weight post-Grammys, but instead of just being the tabloid news show they are, they tried to give real analysis. And they end up perpetuating crappy myths about weight, weight-loss and health. Neil Cavuto had on nutritionist Keren Gilbert who said, if either of them walked into her office, she would advise them to lose weight.

Suggesting that Adele and Kelly Clarkson are hardworking and it’s surprising they are not thin spreads toxic ideas about weight loss, specifically that if you try hard enough you can get that model body (because obvi everyone wants that model bod!). This assertion is also false!

Let’s ignore that Gilbert glossed over the ...

Woman from Fox News’ accidental same-sex wedding picture speaks out

Yesterday the feminist internet collectively lol’d at Fox News when Jessica Valenti realized that the “wedding kiss” picture they’re using to accompany a piece about traditional gender roles is actually of a same sex couple.

Turns out, the two women whose love was mistakenly highlighted by the tirelessly homophobic news outlet are no strangers to the spotlight. Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorage, Alaska won a contest last year to have their dream wedding in New York at the Empire State building, becoming the first same-sex couple to be married at the historic site (here’s a kickass video of them reciting their vows and defending their right to do so).  They are currently on their honeymoon (!) but Stephanie Fiagrelle gave us permission to ...

Fox News’ Andrea Tantaros on how feminists don’t get laid

So it looks like Fox News has their own kinda version of The View these days called The Five — and I gotta say, the show is pretty friggin’ bad, not to mention offensive. Anyway, during a recent discussion on who should pay for dinner (compelling stuff, I know) Andrea Tantaros decided to take it upon herself to pull out every feminist stereotype in the book:

After decades and decades and decades of feminists burning their bras, saying, ‘Make more money than men, do this, run over men, have sex like a man, tell your man what to do, don’t let them open the door –‘ you’re not happy with the product, are ya ladies? A lot ...

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly Rails Gallagher On Paid Maternity Leave

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but for the first time, I have respect for something a Fox News correspondent said.

Megyn Kelly just returned from maternity leave to find that radio host Mike Gallagher had been talking smack about the fact that she had three months off from work — saying that it was “a racket” and “unbelievable.” Big mistake. Kelly went to town on him in a pretty bad-ass way, pointing out that the U.S. is the only industrialized nation that doesn’t require employers for paid maternity leave. Via Think Progress:

KELLY: Is maternity leave, according to you, a racket?

GALLAGHER: Well, do men get maternity leave? I can’t believe I’m asking you this, because you’re ...
