Sex Drives and Eating Disorders.

Check out this surprisingly informative piece from the sexpert over at Fox News (yeah, I did a double take as well), Yvonne Fulbright about the reported decrease in sex organ functioning and loss of sex drive due to anorexia and bulimia. She writes,
*Possibly triggering*

Having an eating disorder is also linked to deficient sexual functioning in women when they become sexually active. When a female severely reduces her intake of food to the point she’s consuming hardly anything, naturally, her reproductive system shuts down.
With low body fat, her body fails to produce sufficient amounts of sex hormones, namely estrogen. Thus, she’ll quit menstruating, making pregnancy difficult for those hoping to reproduce. These endocrinal changes have a domino effect, ...

Target Women: Douchebaggery at its Finest!

Sarah Haskins takes on the douche factor in Carl’s Jr’s ads. I have written about some of their ad campaigns before which are definitely heavily laden with the dude-bro sentiment.

I got to see Sarah Haskins give a presentation at WAM. And you are jealous.
via Feministe.
UPDATE: For those wondering how could I use the word douche (!) here are some thoughts on the matter from Ann and from the Bitch blog.

Notes from a bitch – nutrition…

A few Sundays ago I watched 60 Minutes and caught a segment highlighting the work of Alice Waters, the “mother of slow food.” I was inspired by Waters’ love of food and her passionate belief that everyone is entitled to good food.
I couldn’t agree more!
I was also impressed that Waters works with grocery store chains and food distributors to increase access to locally grown food in communities across the nation.
Fantabulous!
But when challenged about a common critique of organic food…that it is expensive as hell…Waters’ responded…
“We make decisions everyday about what we’re going to eat,” … “And some people want to buy Nike shoes – two pairs, and other people want to eat Bronx ...

Frito Lay Off

The Frito Lay chip company has just launched a disastrous new campaign to try to get women to start snacking on chips as much as their male counterparts. Faced with dropping sales, they employed some neurologists to tell them what sort of kooky advertising would get inside of those tiny lady brains. The New York Times reports:

Juniper Park used neuromarketing in a slightly different way. Ms. Nykoliation began by researching how women’s brains compared with men’s, so the firm could adjust the marketing accordingly. Her research suggested that the communication center in women’s brains was more developed, leading her to infer that women could process ads with more complexity and more pieces of information. A memory and emotional ...

Hooters employee wins benefits after being denied work for showing physical signs of suffering DV.

Yeah, I had to write the whole thing out, since the news report calls her “beaten” which just doesn’t site well with me as a headline or a way to describe someone who has suffered both from domestic violence and then job discrimination.
Let’s face it, Hooters is one of my least favorite companies in America. They cater to the lowest common denominator of male arousal via normative white beauty standards and create spaces where women are objectified. They also serve crappy food. And while this story isn’t surprising (unfortunately), it is disgusting.

Food stamp money finally comes through

A class-action suit against New York City for refusing to provide food stamps to nearly 9,500 households was settled back in 2006, but the reimbursements are just going out now:

The payback does not quite amount to winning the lottery — the 18 largest reimbursements just top $5,000, and most average far less. And all of the credits can be used only for food.
Still, to many who had given up on or forgotten what they were owed, the money in their accounts, some of which arrived before any notice from the government to explain it, has been a rare moment of bounty at an otherwise dismal economic moment.
Monica Ryan learned of her good fortune when she went to ...

Michael Pollan on what the candidates aren’t talking about: Food

Michael Pollan had a fantastic article in the NYTimes magazine earlier this month entitled Farmer in Chief. If you haven’t heard of Michael Pollan before, go pick up a copy of the Omnivore’s Dilemma immediately. It has been garnering a lot of buzz for a few years now and in that book Pollan does an amazing job of making the politics of industrial agriculture interesting. A large portion of that book focuses on how corn is at the center of almost everything we eat and how the government influenced this change in the national diet.
In Farmer in Chief, Pollan outlines an impressive food policy for the new administration. He explains how everything from farmers markets, ...
