The Best and Worst of the Golden Globes

Last night everyone in the world (read: everyone I follow on Twitter) watched the Golden Globes, which promised to be an important event for women in entertainment with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting and a bunch of talented ladies nominated. In case you had better things to do than watch (read a book, take a nap, feed your cat), we’ve compiled the best and worst moments from the night—from a feminist perspective, of course.

The Top Feminist Moments:

5. Lena Dunham wins stuff. I get that this is a controversial call, and I’m pretty ambivalent about Dunham. I absolutely agree that she is no progressive feminist leader; the “Girls” creator/director/writer/star has some serious thinking to do about ...

Where are the women? Cannes Film Festival edition

At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, 22 films directed by 22 men will compete for the prestigious top award. But to feminist criticism of that dismal lineup, Cannes says, essentially, “Well, you can’t make us pick a girl just because she’s a girl.”

Of course, those numbers are pretty standard for Cannes. Last year there were a record-breaking four women in the running for the Palme D’Or, the festival’s top prize. But apparently that was but a minor blip in the long dude-dominated history of the event. Two years ago, there were no women either, and in the 64 years of the festival only one woman–Jane Campion–has ever actually won the Palme D’Or.

The French feminist group La Barbe took the ...

More on why you must see Pariah

Samhita mentioned that a crew of us went to see Pariah last weekend. If Meryl Streep’s shout out to the lead actress Adepero Oduye during her Golden Globes acceptance speech wasn’t enough of an encouragement to rush out and see the film, I thought I would add my two cents to the symphony of praise for this film.

Pariah was absolutely breathtaking. So genuine, so raw and very touching. But also, and this is where the film was set apart from other recent portrayals–uplifting. I kept telling people who asked that it was sad, but it was like a really good cry–you just feel so much better at the end. I won’t spoil the film, but just say that the ...
