Conservative commentator blames single moms and “women’s lib” for police violence

As I mentioned yesterday, it was probably only a matter of time before someone found a way to blame feminism for the police violence that’s taken center stage in the national conversation in the last few weeks. Conservative commentator Dr. Ben Carson’s attempt to tie the murders of black men at the hands of the police back to the “women’s lib movement” and the “Me generation” of the ’60s in an interview on American Family Radio’s “Today’s Issues” is truly a sight to behold.

About that dad’s social media discipline: Sometimes it ain’t that deep

This week, ever vigilant “Feminist Twitter” has been abuzz about a black father in Louisville, Kentucky who posted these photos (and caption) of his daughter after he found out that she had broken several of his house rules. The critique and skepticism of this man’s form of discipline have ranged from claiming it was unnecessary and counterproductive in the face of the “real” issues that this girl must have, to calling it slut-shaming and emotionally abusive. The general sentiment seems to be that posting pictures of his daughter online invokes a disciplinary tradition of humiliation that can only be harmful. How I do I feel about it? Well, my personal opinion is that: it ain’t that deep.

Chanel’s feminist rally

Paris Fashion Week events aren’t the traditional “stuff” that makes feminist news. But last week, Chanel had feminism at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Under the leadership of designer Karl Lagerfeld, the grand finale of Chanel’s runway show was a recreated 1960s-style feminist rally, complete with picket signs and blow horns. The feminist fashion hybrid moment was soundtracked by Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman” (which is a bit corny, I’ll admit) and featured some model heavy hitters like Gisele Bundchen, Cara Delevingne (and her amazing eyebrows), and Kendall Jenner (yes, THAT Kendall Jenner).

Feminism shouldn’t make men comfortable

Emma Watson’s speech on gender equality at the UN got a lot of attention, and that’s great. The more that hop the feminism train and use their platforms to spread the message, the merrier. But there’s a tiny little thing I’d like to disagree with her about.

The thrust of the speech is about getting men on board with the mission of gender equality. Watson said: “How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation? Emma Watson calls on men to make gender equality their issue too

As a member of the Harry Potter generation, it made me more emotional than I care to admit to see Hermione Granger Emma Watson call for the world to unite to defeat Voldemort gender inequality.

Watson, who is the newest U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, spoke at the UN this weekend to launch the “HeForShe” campaign,” which aims to mobilize men and boys as advocates for ending gender inequality. She extended “a formal invitation” to men to make gender equality their issue too.
