Millennials care more about parenting than marriage.

The last few years we have seen extensive data on the changing face of the American family. According to the American Community Survey an annual study done by the Census Bureau, there are 104 million unmarried Americans representing 45% of the adult population. Since 2005, the majority of US households are not headed by married couples and the number of non-married-couple households have grown. The most recent data was the Obama Administration’s comprehensive report on women and girls released this month which found on average, men and women are waiting to marry.

Another study released yesterday from the Pew Research Center found that millennials (that’s anyone who is 19-29 today) think parenting is more important than marriage.

The big takeaway is that, as Gerson writes, “The tensions between changing lives and resistant institutions have created dilemmas for everyone.” As a generation that watched our parents struggle to find work/life balance in a world that doesn’t support it, we want more, but are pretty sober about the realities we face in trying to pursue it.

Awkward New Study Has Even More Awkward New Finding


Telegraph UK is reporting that women in this generation have three times more sexual partners on average than their grandmothers did. From the article:

“Almost one in 10 of those asked said that they had had slept with more than 10 lovers by the age of 24. The average was 5.65 people.

By contrast, women of their mother’s generation, who were in their early twenties in the 1980s, had had an average of 3.72 sexual partners by the same age.

And…women of their grandmother’s generation, aged 24 in the 1960s, averaged…1.67 partners.”
