Australian Company Offering Double Pay to Women Who Return to Work

Much ink has been spilled on this site over the past few months on equal pay, and with good reason. It’s one of the most obvious and tangible manifestations of sexism in society today.

We’ve published a guest post on why we can’t wait for fair pay, and a roundup of good reads for Equal Pay Day earlier this week. We even got the chance to interview the poster child for equal pay, Lilly Ledbetter herself. But we haven’t had the chance to cover something quite so progressive as this: a company in Australia is offering new moms double pay for their first six weeks back after maternity leave.

Cool right? I think so too. Yahoo! News is reporting ...

The Feministing Five: Lilly Ledbetter

Lilly Ledbetter, a woman whose story affects us all, recently came out with her autobiography, “Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond.” Her story is more important than ever today. Especially since women still only make 77 cents to every dollar that men make, even as we surpass them in institutions of higher learning. Especially since Gov. Walker (R-WI) recently repealed his state’s 2009 Equal Pay Enforcement Act and state Sen. Grothman backed him, saying “Money is more important for men.” And especially since this week, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney replied, “We’ll get back to you on that,” on whether women should be paid ...

Romney campaign on whether women should be paid fairly: “We’ll get back to you on that”

Remember that whole women problem that the Republicans definitely don’t have?

I think it just got a whole lot worse.

On a media call this morning, when asked if he supports the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which helps ensure women get paid fairly, the Romney camp refused to answer. Audio of Romney campaign aides saying “we’ll get back to you on that” after being asked about the bill can be found here.

The ridiculous and dodgy comment inspired the hashtag #WellGetBackToYouOnThat on Twitter.

As you all know, the Lilly Ledbetter Act is an important piece of feminist history. It was signed just three years ago, when it became the first bill Obama signed as President in January 2009. It would be pretty ...

Infographic: Women still make less money!

If you’re one of those people worried about the collapse of traditional society and nostalgic for the days when women knew their place… you probably won’t be reading Feministing. But if you did, you’d be thrilled to see this infographic from The National Journal, showing that women make less than men — they even make up 44% of the workforce!

Wednesday Weigh-In: What do you want from an Equal Pay App?

Last week, the Obama Administration launched the Equal Pay App Challenge, inviting software developers to help women ensure that they’re being paid fairly.

I’m excited to see what developers come up with. In my mind, there are so many ways that technology could help women achieve pay equity. The app could publish a list of position levels and careers with average salary figures, for the sake of comparison. Or, it could offer tips for negotiating. What about a women’s “bill of rights” to use should an employer try to deny you your fair share? The possibilities seem pretty endless!

This week’s Wednesday Weigh-In focuses on technology and the pay gap. So weigh in!

How could ...

Quick hit: New Catalyst study finds that women do ask

But they don’t get. At least, not at the same rates as men do.

Two researchers from Catalyst, a research and consulting organization that aims to make workplaces more diverse and equitable, are writing a series for the Washington Post about gender inequity in the workplace. Their first article features research from a new Catalyst report on how an employee’s gender affects their salary growth and promotion:

Our findings run counter to media coverage of the so-called phenomenon that “women don’t ask.” Instead the problem may be, as some other research has shown, that people routinely take a tougher stance against women in negotiations than they take against men—for example quoting higher starting prices when trying to sell women cars ...

Closing the gender wage gap at the federal level

The federal wage gap is slightly better than the gap for all employees in the US – federally employed women earn 89 cents for every dollar men earn, instead of 77 cents. I know, winning!

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released a joint memorandum Tuesday committing to “ensure the most rigorous possible enforcement of our federal equal pay laws,” as the Washington Post reports.

Representatives from EEOC and OPM are working with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) “to identify the reasons for this wage gap and ways to close it.” The GAO says 7 cents of the 11 cent wage gap still can’t be explained after controlling for factors like occupation, ...

Women need a PhD to earn as much as men with a BA

Well these are some pretty stark stats. Kay Steiger points out these findings from the latest report by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, “The College Payoff: Education, Opportunity, Lifetime Earnings:

Just look at the red text to see what an extreme gap we’re talking about:

Women have to have a PhD to make as much as men with a BA

and

Men with some college but no degree earn about the same as women with a Bachelor’s degree

We know there’s still a wage gap, with women as a whole earning 77 cents for every dollar men earn, and women of color earning even less. What this chart points out is how much ...
