Southern Tuesday: Election Recap

Mitt Romney still can’t close the deal with GOP primary voters.

It feels like I’ve been writing this same line over and over the past few months. Last night on Southern Tuesday, Mississippi and Alabama cast votes for their Republican nominee. Rick Santorum came out on top in both contests. Newt Gingrich (who overperforms in the southern states) came in second. And Mitt Romney, third in both states.

At this stage in the game, 27 states have voted. Mitt Romney has been considered the frontrunner the entire time — with a few moments of weakness when other candidates surged ahead temporarily, but he has significantly more money and his SuperPAC floods the airwaves in each state with negative ads attacking opponents. ...

Rick Santorum: Single mothers “breed” criminals

From the Rick Santorm archives, new foolishness emerges. As unearthed by the good people at Mother Jones, in 1994 when Santorum was running for Senate in Pennsylvania he boldly asserted that single moms were the downfall of the United States. At a town hall in Clairton, Pennsylvania, Santorum said:

“Most people agree a continuation of the current [welfare] system will be the ruination of this country. We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it’s falling apart because of single moms.”

Santorum made this point in the context of government spending and moralizing about women’s life choices, but he went further to make a ridiculous assertion about single motherhood and crime, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that ...

The wins and losses of yesterday’s election

Yesterday’s election was a big night for progressives–especially when it came to defeating ultra-conservative ballot initiatives, and a few ultra-conservative politicians. After the blood bath that was the midterm election in 2010, we saw what a year under right-wing leadership meant across the country. It has meant many ideological laws and initiatives aimed at restricting reproductive rights, unions and immigrants. It has also meant extreme budget cuts to social programs.

Last night seems like an overall win for pushing back against this conservative trend. It is true that in many ways it feels like a big win because we were expecting to lose, but it is still a possible foreshadowing of the tide turning for 2012.

Updated: New accuser goes public about alleged sexual harassment assault by Herman Cain

Updated 2:19pm EST: Sharon Bialek has come forward with allegations against Herman Cain that sounds more sexual assault than just harassment (possibly triggering):

A woman says Republican presidential contender Herman Cain reached under her skirt for her genitals and pushed her head toward his crotch in July 1997.

Sharon Bialek told reporters Monday in New York that she met with Cain to ask about getting her old job back at the National Restaurant Association when the incident happened in Washington. At the time, Cain was chief of a restaurant trade group.

Bialek says that, when she asked Cain what he was doing, Cain said, “You want a job, right?”

The Biggest Sleazer: Mitt Romney v. Scott Brown

Is it just me, or are politician dudes being super sexist and sleazy lately? Take Scott Brown, for example. Eric Kleefeld from TPM found this gem on a radio show in response to Elizabeth Warren’s recent comments poking fun at his nude spread in Cosmo:

[O]ne of the hosts asked Brown: “Have you officially responded to Elizabeth Warren’s comment about how she didn’t take her clothes off?”

Brown began laughing lightheartedly, and gave his reply. “Thank God,” he said, with more laughter.

Last night in Ames, Iowa, several of the GOP candidates got together for a debate in advance of the weekend’s largely meaningless but apparently highly newsworthy Iowa Straw Poll.

Think Progress has put together this handy short video, and transcript, of all of last night’s candidates – Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman – stating their positions on marriage equality. Unsurprisingly, they all think that we should continue discriminating against same sex couples! With the exception of Jon Huntsman, none of them is even down with civil unions.

Election 2012: the year of the woman?

With five out of six victories going to women candidates, the Wisconsin recall elections have shown us one thing: 2012 is set to be the year of the woman. Republicans who supported Governor Walker’s union busting bill are being challenged by pro-choice women. These women – Nancy Nusbaum, Sandy Pasch, Shelly Moore, Jessica King and Jennifer Shilling are foreshadowing what is to come on the national level.

If all of the Democratic women hold their seats next fall, the Democrats will hold the Senate. With the assault both on at reproductive rights the state and national level, electing and re-electing women candidates is essential to pushing back against anti-women legislation.
