“They don’t sit in their apartment and die…” and other Romney ‘gaffes’.

I’m not the only one who’s asked this question out loud, but alas: Does Mitt Romney even want to be President?

If you weren’t watching the Emmys last night, perhaps you caught this light bright snappy answer from Candidate Romney on 60 Minutes in response to a question regarding access to health care for all Americans:

“Well, we do provide care for people who don’t have insurance,” he said in an interview with Scott Pelley of CBS’s “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night. “If someone has a heart attack, they don’t sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care. And different states have different ways of ...

Obama for America launches “For All” website to hit Romney for dismissing half the nation

In 2008, Obama for America broke down barriers with their website format which mirrored Facebook (and was in fact designed by one of the founders of Facebook) and in doing so appealed specifically to younger voters.  This year, the Obama campaign is leaps and bounds ahead of Team Romney when it comes to the effective use of social media.

Today they have launched a great new interactive site in response to Mitt Romney’s now infamous (and a popular GIF’d “gaffe”) 47% video which shows America which campaign is FOR ALL which is intended to target voters between the ages of 18-29 (for a second I’ll pretend that I’m 29).

The images will appear on the Obama 2012 Instagram and everyone can ...

DNC: Women take center stage

There is no question that this is a choice election.  Almost every speech whether delivered by the First Lady or the president of Planned Parenthood has received a raucous reception from delegates and supporters here in Charlotte particularly on issues impacting women. The Democratic party will emerge from this week’s convention as the party solidly on the side of women, in stark contrast to the other side, and the message is clear: Trust women.

I was surprised by the willingness with which the convention has stood firm and the issue of choice not only in rhetoric but with who is given coveted prime time speaking slots.  The president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, the president of Planned Parenthood, and of course women’s ...

Chris Matthews goes HAM on Preibus. Heads explode.

If you haven’t seen Chris Matthews go, (what I and others affectionately like to refer to as) H.A.M. (Hard as a Mutha@&$) on GOP Chairman Reince Preibus yesterday on Morning Joe, this is for you:

Shorter Chris Matthews: We see you. This is as good as Soledad’s recent smackdowns, yo. Matthews stumbles a bit, but you know something… I ain’t mad. Not one bit. I really, really, really appreciate that the responsibility of calling the GOP in their signaling and race talk strategy is not solely on the shoulders of a person of color or woman. The language is divisive and sometimes, we really need other people (white folks) to speak up when they see it. It means that ...

Did Akin “legitimate rape” doctor meet with Romney?

This is certainly interesting.  It appears that Dr. John Wilke and Mitt Romney have a history.  Even though the Romney camp is claiming a Romney administration would not ban abortion in all cases with no exceptions, Romney might have some explaining to do in terms of just how connected he is to the “doctor” that told Rep. Todd Akin that women can’t get pregnant from rape.

During the 2008 presidential election cycle, Wilke was an official surrogate for Romney.  Here is the official press release welcoming to the Romney campaign back in 2007 as an “important surrogate.”  Wilke also claims that just last year he met with Romney who said, “we agree on almost everything.”  Now whether Romney ...

Mitt Romney has no African American support

A new NBC/WSJ poll released yesterday shows that Mitt Romney has 0 support among African American voters.

Quel surprise. To be fair, however, Republicans have fared poorly with African American voters for decades and while the GOP in previous national electoral contests made modest efforts to reach out across the divide to African American voters in the last decade, the current language in this campaign does not. By defining American (see: Anglo Saxon gaffe) and with state GOP efforts pushing for voter ID laws that disproportionately affects communities of color, it seems the GOP has abandoned any meaningful effort to connect with African American voters.

Meanwhile, on the voter suppression front, Ohio GOP Election Official Doug Priesse, in response to the ...

Romney, the GOP platform and why this isn’t about Todd Akin

Image via Choose Ryan Lose Choice.

As Todd Akin released a really terrible video apology this morning about his “legitimate rape” remarks and Republicans (including Romney) try to distance themselves from the Missouri senatorial candidate, other striking facts have come to light that reminds us what this issue is really about. Just yesterday, the GOP platform committee drafted a revision of the Republican Party platform supporting a “human life amendment” that does not specify exceptions for rape or incest:

Faithful to the ‘self-evident’ truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support ...
