Half-price emergency contraception can be ordered online if you think ahead

A new health care company called Syzygy sells emergency contraception online for $25 including shipping–which is about half the cost of EC sold at a pharmacy.

Eliminating the middleman and shipping directly to the consumer not only reduces the cost but also sidesteps some of the other barriers folks often face trying to get EC. Sometimes pharmacies don’t stock it, and despite the fact that EC is supposed to be available to everyone over-the-counter, pharmacists routinely, incorrectly turn away young people and men. And getting a discreet, unmarked package in the mail might be more comfortable than talking to a cashier for some folks.

Can you access Plan B?

Emergency contraception is now legally available over the counter, but as we have reported previously, there are still barriers to accessing Plan B, including pharmacies that still keep the product behind the counter.

The Media Consortium is running a project to map EC access now that the product should be available everywhere. Check out the project’s video below, and then fill out the form after the jump about the accessibility of Plan B at your local drugstore. If enough of us participate, we can get a picture of emergency contraception access in this country.

In NYC? Join tonight’s flashmob to demand EC access!

Tonight, reproductive justice advocates in New York City will join together in a flashmob to demand over-the-counter emergency contraception for people of all ages. As Feminsting has written about before, the Obama administration refuses to respect voluminous research that EC is really, really safe and instead relies on sexist, paternalistic instinct to deny access to young people and other marginalized groups. First Health and Human Services, with the administration’s support, overruled the FDA’s decision to provide open EC availability. Now the administration and co-opted FDA are refusing a judge’s order to drop the unscientific restrictions. Why is Obama playing politics with our health?

Age restrictions on emergency contraception access are unacceptable

Feministing co-founder Jessica Valenti has a well written and compelling piece in the Nation today on the FDA’s decision to make emergency contraception, or the morning after pill, available over the counter to women older than 15 years old who can “prove their age”.

From the FDA press release:

The product will now be labeled “not for sale to those under 15 years of age *proof of age required* not for sale where age cannot be verified.” Plan B One-Step will be packaged with a product code prompting a cashier to request and verify the customer’s age. A customer who cannot provide age verification will not be able to purchase the product. In addition, Teva has ...
