Naomi Campbell checks interviewer while advocating for more models of color

Naomi Campbell has become notoriously known for her episodes of violence. Specifically, she has been charged with assault 3 different times for hitting or throwing her phone (obviously this was before cell phone market values were $600) at assistants and her housekeeper. It’s safe to say that sometimes she doesn’t handle her anger well. However, that does not equate to her being an “angry” person as an interviewer suggested to her a couple of weeks ago.

Are there too many white men in the White House?

After The New York Times ran the above photo alongside the headline, “Obama’s Remade Inner Circle Has an All-Male Look, So Far,” the media jumped on the narrative that President Obama is surrounding himself with white guys to the dismay of the diverse coalition who elected him to office.

While it’s certainly true his first four cabinet appointments have been white guys, it’s not actually true that there are no women or people of color in the White House in senior staff positions. How does media get past their binders full of minorities?

I graduated from journalism school in 2001, right around when “New Media” became a thing to take in j-schools across the country. We learned how to use basic HTML! We wrote stories … for the WEB! The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University — sorry, the The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University —  is, and was, one of the best places to get a journalism education in the country.

But in my time there, from 1997-2001, we never talked about media diversity. We studied the history of journalism. We studied the ethics of journalism. We earned — or at least I earned — my fair share of Medill Fs. Our profs, mostly seasoned Chicago veterans ...

New York media power couples are almost all white and straight

The New York Observer posted a slideshow of forty-eight New York media power couples (including our very own Jessica Valenti) but there were two very obvious omissions from the list. People of color and members of the LGBT community.

On a list of 48 couples total, one couple was black and one was a same sex couple. I also think I spotted an Asian man in slide 42! It’s like if “Where’s Waldo” were black.

Really, guys? You would think a list this large could stand to be a little more diverse, right?

Apparently, the original version of this list of power couples included zero black faces and no members of the LGBT community. ...

WaPo’s Next Top Pundit contest finalists: Pale and male

You might remember that last year, our own Courtney was a finalist in the Washington Post’s America’s Next Great Pundit contest. Well, the contest is back for a second round – yesterday, the paper revealed its list of fifty finalists, chosen from the 1400 short op-ed submissions it received.

Out of fifty finalists, guess how many are women?

No, seriously, guess.

Eleven. Eleven out of fifty. The list of finalists looks awfully male and awfully pale with, as far as I can tell, only six people who are not white making the cut.
