The personal is political, and also personal: Why choosing to date within your race isn’t racist

I fear that I’m about to wade into all kinds of messy territory, but alas, that is the work of feminist critical thinking. This morning I came across a Slate piece by Reihan Salam about why expressing a same-race preference on dating websites is racist. I beg to differ. Salam’s main argument comes down to this:

“There are good reasons to question the moral appropriateness of strong same-race preferences and their close cousin, in-group favoritism. In The American Non-Dilemma, Nancy DiTomaso argues that persistent racial inequality in the United States is not solely or even primarily a reflection of racism and discrimination. Rather, it reflects the fact that whites tend to help other whites without ever discriminating against or ...

We all really need to stop caring about Lebron James’ mother’s sex life

Meet Lambo.

Lebron James’ mother is dating a rapper who is only three years older than him, and who likes to publicly express admiration for the two-time NBA champion. This apparently threatens the collective ego of basketball fans around the country.

Since the Internet uncovered this guy, fans and haters have gleefully pointed to comments on the rapper’s Instagram account big-upping Lebron, calling him a “role model” before declaring that “life is about being positive”. They openly mock photos where he displays LeBron’s championship ring and models it for the camera (Deadspin helpfully points out that he “has to use two fingers” because the ring is too big on him).

I wrote about Lebron, family honor ...

Guy texts unsolicited dick pic, woman sends it to his mother, wins

Trevor, who is really good at flirting, likes to get women’s attention by flashing them:

The woman Trevor texted this time was not having it, though.

Trevor doesn’t see the big deal, and starts insulting this woman he’s apparently trying to hit on. The conclusion of their conversation is after the jump – for the full exchange check out Happy Place. Spoilers: she forwards it all to Trevor’s mom. New technology means new places to harass people, but it’s also given us new ways to fight back. Because dick pics are forever. This woman rocks.

(Day After) Wednesday Weigh-In: Dating While Feminist

Dating seems to be on everyone’s minds lately. Perhaps it’s part of the new year, new me, new boo energy still lingering in the air. Even here at Feministing we’ve been talking about “Crazy Blind Dates” and the challenges to Darwin’s dating ideas. And much of what I hear about dating in hip hop revolves around Christian Louboutins. All of this is wonderful, for someone who isn’t me.

To put it simply, dating while feminist, black, queer, polyamorous, broke, and loud means not dating, kind of. I find that people who compliment any one of those traits too well completely fail in regards to the others. Thinking about feminism specifically, I’ve found that it’s cute and sexy to ...

Quick Hit: The Nice Guys of OKCupid

Surely even the most brilliant parody of Nice Guy syndrome can’t compete with the real things said by self-proclaimed “nice guys.” And OkCupid is clearly the best environment to watch them in action. Check out the new Tumblr “Nice Guys” of Okcupid to see their utter lack of self-awareness on full display. (Spoiler: Being “friendzoned” is apparently the worst thing in the whole world.)

Youth dating violence impacting even younger teens

Over a decade ago we learned it was young people (age 16-24) that endured the highest rates of dating violence which catapulted a variety of programs in an effort to decrease the disastrous rates with which young people were experiencing intimate partner violence. Ten years later it appears little has changed. The Center for Disease Control found that today 1 in 10 teenagers still experience dating violence. And some research suggests that teens as young as 11 and 12 have experienced dating violence.

According to the New York Times, this new data has caused many intervention programs to target even younger youth–educating those as young as 11 about the impacts of teen dating violence.

Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, a ...

Breaking: Single women are not tragic, lonely, were-witches

OK, I haven’t really heard any one call single ladies were-witches, but if you believe we are tragic, scary, cat hoarders–then I have to wonder what else you think is true.

The life and times of single ladies is the subject of constant speculation. You would think there is an actual news story there seeing as how much mainstream news coverage it gets–but there isn’t. Most stories about single women people are full of stereotypes, sexism, unrealistic expectations and the assumption that everyone is looking to get marry and make baby. Even if they continually say they are not or they just don’t care.

The problem with a world that relies on the worst dating advice imaginable is that even ...

Quick Hit: Samhita on Men With Low Self Esteem

Our own Samhita has a piece at GOOD about one of her dating dealbreakers: what she calls Men With Low Self Esteem.

By MWLSE, I don’t mean dudes who are a little bit insecure. We all get a little insecure from time to time. I mean men who are so bogged down by their warped vision of themselves that it haunts every aspect of their being.

n retrospect, I should have known I was dealing with a MWLSE. Instead, I swallowed his lines and tried to look at the positives, even if that meant making them up. He recognizes that I’m almost too incredible for him to handle. It’s about time someone figured that out, ...
