NARAL Pro-Choice NC releases undercover investigation of CPCs

Today, NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina released their undercover investigation into crisis pregnancy centers, and it’s pretty friggin’ scary.

The state actually has an intense presence of crisis pregnancy centers — in fact, there are 8 times as many CPCs in the North Carolina than there are abortion clinics. And now, two recent state laws will drive even more funding to the centers:

Money from sales of the new “Choose Life” license plates, which are expected to become available later this year, will go to the anti-abortion centers. On Wednesday, under the new law that places restrictions on abortions, a state-run website will launch and list the places that provide free ultrasounds, a service provided ...

San Francisco to ban crisis pregnancy centers (and the creepiest photo ever)

First, the good news:

San Francisco legislators on Tuesday took the first step towards clamping down on “false and misleading advertising” from “crisis pregnancy centers,” following the lead of several other American cities.

Supervisor Malia Cohen believes that these so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” such as Bay Area-based First Resort, lie to women seeking options in an unexpected pregnancy, according to the San Francisco Appeal online newspaper.

Instead of offering counseling around a woman’s choices, they are steered toward a right-wing, anti-abortion agenda. There are three such centers in San Francisco, and they’re also drawn ire from mayoral candidates.

Very awesome news, let’s hope this moves forward. Now to the accompanying image:

What every woman should know about CPCs (in handy cartoon form)

Check out this awesome graphic report on crisis pregnancy centers by Susie Cagle. Her description? “Fertile-looking lay person + pregnancy tests + Bush-era abstinence brochures + comfy chairs + lots of calendars +ultrasound machine + nurse = CPC!”

Cagle went undercover at one CPC in San Francisco, First Resort, to get a first-hand taste of how they use “kindness, comfort, and misinformation” to push their anti-choice agenda. Happily, San Francisco is pushing for a bill to require truth-in-advertising from CPCs in the city.

But, as the battle over similar laws in New York City and Baltimore continues in the courts, raising public awareness of CPCs is just as important. As organizations that fundamentally rely on ...

Anti-choice groups playing dirty with google ads.

Anti-choice group Online for Life has dedicated monies to buying up Google ads so when a woman is googling to find access to a reproductive health/abortion provider, she is intercepted by ads that claim they offer full medical counseling–but are actually for crisis pregnancy centers.

Online for Life writes on their website about this new deceitful and problematic campaign,

The primary place where abortion-determined women and men go to find abortion providers is the Internet. There are over 6 million Internet searches every month for abortion-related information in the United States alone.

However, a large majority of abortion-determined people change their mind and heart when they see their baby during an ultrasound. Seeing the form, movement, and life of a baby—their ...

What I am looking out for in tonight’s premiere in 12th and Delaware.

Transcript after the jump.

Tonight is the premiere of the HBO documentary “12th and Delaware” a film about a crisis pregnancy center and an abortion clinic that is across the street from each other. From some of the reviews I have read, it appears that teens and young women are mentioned often when they discuss who is seeking services at these clinics. Our current media environment where pregnant teens who choose abortions are markedly absent from some of the most popular reality TV shows that engage with the topic of pregnancy. As such, it’s so important that HBO is showing a film that reminds us that some people do terminate their pregnancies, one-third of teen pregnancies to ...
