Our girl Courtney Martin says yes. In the Times’s Room for Debate, Courtney calls them outdated, and says they perpetuate the harmful idea that success in the real world depends on a woman’s ability to be a very particular kind of beautiful:

Let’s face it: the most beautiful women you’ve ever encountered would be total losers in a traditional pageant. That’s because authentic, messy, transcendent beauty can’t be scored. NYC Feministing Holiday Happy Hour (and Courtney Martin Lovefest)

It’s been quite a while since our last happy hour, so we’re extra excited about this one.

On Wednesday, November 30th, the Feministing crew will be getting together to celebrate two very special things: the holidays and Courtney Martin. As you know, this lovely lady has been quite a force in the Feministing community — or as we like to call her, our “Ray of Light.” While we’re continuing to work with her in many other capacities — like around the research she’s been doing on the sustainability of the feminist blogosphere — her transition from her role as Feministing Editor is one to commemorate and we thought what better to celebrate with some cocktails and merrymaking. ...
