Sports fans to get free condoms at Euro 2012

Can you imagine if the US government gave out free condoms at the Super Bowl? That’s basically the equivalent of what will happen in Poland next month, when the country is one of the hosts of Euro 2012, Europe’s annual football tournament held every four years (that’s soccer to all us ignorant Americans). The tournament runs from June 8 to July 1 in Poland and the Ukraine

The National AIDS Centre will distribute 150,000 condoms and information about safe sex to people attending Euro 2012 events in all four host cities in Poland. The leaflets will be printed in six different languages. The campaign uses the slogan, “I play fair, I use a condom.”

I love the idea of associating safe sex with ...

Condom policing in New York

These days, there’s a fairly broad consensus– among public health advocates,  educators, parents, the media, and the porn industry– that condoms are GOOD. Whether one is penis-possessing or just along for the ride, most of us have been told to “wrap it up” since before we were performing acts that required us to do so. So why in the world do New York City police think it’s OK to confiscate condoms from some people — in particular, women suspected of prostitution — and actually use them as evidence against them in court?

As this article explains:

“Last year, New York City health workers gave out 37.2 million condoms. That works out to an average of 70 condoms every minute of ...

Will.i.am doesn’t like women who have their own condoms and I don’t like him

Slut-shaming with a side of awful sex education? My favorite! Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas recently told Elle that he thinks women who have their own condoms are a total boner-killer.

ELLE: If you walked into a woman’s house, what one item would convince you that you weren’t compatible?

W: If she had condoms in her house, that would just fuckin’ throw me off. That’s just tacky.

ELLE: Well, okay, I could see if she had a candy bowl full of them on the coffee table. But if she’s got a few in a drawer, wouldn’t that simply suggest she’s health-conscious?

W: I just think, like, if you’re into someone and you guys get to that level, then that’s something ...

Apply to the Great American Condom Campaign!

Are you a college student in the US who’s concerned about a lack of access to safer sex supplies on your campus? Our friends at Advocates for Youth are once again accepting applications to be a Great American Condom Campaign SafeSite. Some info about the program:

The Great American Condom Campaign is a youth-led grassroots movement to reduce unintended pregnancies and the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections by normalizing condom use on college and university campuses. Students from across the country apply to become SafeSites, individual condom distribution points, and receive a box of 500 Trojan condoms to distribute to their peers. SafeSites are also tasked with educating their peers about safer sex and advocating on ...

The Pope’s recent gesture is not an about face on HIV prevention

This weekend, the Pope has drawn wide praise after comments he made in the recently released, Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times, that support condoms in some circumstances. But I agree with the Christian Science Monitor’s assertion; this is evolution, not revolution.

Let us first look at the context of both comments.

In March 2009, the Pope was on a plane ride to Yaounde, Cameroon during his first visit to Africa as Pope when he said, ”You can’t resolve it with the distribution of condoms,” the pope continued ”On the contrary, it increases the problem.” While he later followed up by saying that a moral attitude toward sex would help fight ...
