Pariah: Best movie of last year*

Eesha, Miriam, Zerlina, Lori, Deanna Zandt and myself all went to see Pariah together last week and I think I speak for all of us when I say, if there is one movie you see this year–make it this one.

Pariah is set in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and tells the story of Alike (pronounced A-lee-kay and brilliantly portrayed by newcomer Adepero Oduye) and her trials and tribulations figuring out who she is, managing her middle class family’s expectations, her crushes, her heartbreaks and her best friend Laura–a very lovable AG. She is also a poet, a talented student and loves indie rock. Alike is probably one of the closest depictions of someone I might know in real life, I have ...

Rachel Maddow on the ethics of coming out

Yesterday, The Guardian ran a profile of Rachel Maddow. The profile covered her rise to prominence, her approach to covering the news and, of course, the fact that she’s openly gay. It also addressed, or claimed to address, her attitude toward Anderson Cooper:

Maddow is one of the very few gay news anchors in America – well, one of the very few openly gay news anchors. Does she feel frustration towards an equally well-known news presenter who is widely assumed to be gay but has never come out? For the first time, Maddow pauses: “I’m sure other people in the business have considered reasons why they’re doing what they’re doing, but I do think that if you’re gay you have ...

Undocumented youth host their own coming out day

Transcript after the jump

On Friday, the Immigrant Youth Justice League hosted their own coming out day for undocumented immigrant youth. This week, the National Immigrant Youth Alliance and other groups are calling for a National Coming Out of the Shadows week. Colorlines will be posting stories from undocumented youth throughout the week.

As a queer Latina and the child of immigrants, I get chills each time I’ve seen over these past few years these brave young people stand up and put their own lives on the line for the sake of all immigrants in the US.

Coming out is a concept initially used by the LGBT movement–and it may be our most powerful to date. Making ourselves visible, making ...

Happy Coming Out Day!

Just a momentary pause from our posting hiatus to say Happy Coming Out Day!

Each year, October 11th marks National Coming Out Day, where folks around the country stand up and say I’m Gay/Lesbian/Queer/Questioning/Bisexual/Pansexual/Trans/Poly/Two spirit/AG/________ and I’m proud!

You fill in the blank with your preferred label.

With the recent spate of LGBT suicides, harassment and bullying, it’s even more important for those of us who are safe and able to be out and proud.

It’s well documented that the more people someone knows who are LGBTQ, the more accepting they are of queer folks.

So find someway to celebrate today, even as an ally who supports everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression.

New project from Dan Savage: It Gets Better

Dan Savage (the man behind the Savage Love sex advice column and podcast) has started a new project, called It Gets Better. It was inspired by the suicide of gay teenager Billy Lucas, after he experienced much bullying.

About the project:

If you’re gay or lesbian or bi or trans, and you’ve ever read about a kid like Billy Lucas and thought, “Fuck, I wish I could’ve told him that it gets better,” this is your chance. We can’t help Billy, but there are lots of other Billys out there—other despairing LGBT kids who are being bullied and harassed, kids who don’t think they have a future—and we can help them….
