Hidden Barriers

As a result of my participation in the Vagina Monologues, I was approached by my university’s television station to participate in a documentary. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first documentary of its kind done by the university. It was called Hidden Barriers. The purpose of the documentary was to highlight the barriers that students encounter as they go through their academic studies. I agreed to volunteer because I was fairly certain that they didn’t have any other transgender people participating. In this, I was proven correct.

SaVE Act: A Step in the Right Direction

As we have said before, rape on college campuses is a huge issue that needs to be better addressed. It looks like the proposed SaVE Act may be a step in the right direction.

The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, or SaVE Act, would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 and expand the 1990 Jeanne Clery Act to “improve education and prevention related to campus sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.”

Critic’s Pick: Oversight

Now that we’ve explored several aspects of sexual assault policies, it’s time to examine how policies are monitored and revised. Who is in charge of enforcing the policy? Is there a review process to fix problems? How can students or other members of the community raise concerns about the policy and procedures? Every school must be mindful of oversight.

Regardless of what the school’s policy looks like, it is of utmost importance that oversight is clearly articulated. It doesn’t matter how good a policy is if no one is going to follow it as written. I’ve found some good examples of well-defined oversight that might be helpful ...

University of Vermont Paper Posts “The Hipster Girl Hookup”

I attend the University of Vermont, which I generally consider to be a safe, progressive school.  Over the past few weeks there have been nearly a dozen incidents of sexual assault in the area, consisting of an as-yet-unknown male assailant groping women and then running.

The University of Vermont alternative newspaper the Watertower decided that now was the appropriate time to publish an article entitled “the hipster girl hookup: a beginner’s guide.”

Feminist Issues on Campus

I took a few months off from posting here on Feministing mostly because there are a lot of issues on campus that I know about but haven’t named or even begun to address. The difficulty lies not with being able to recognize that there are problems on campus. There certainly are enough of those to go around. Instead, the problem that I have with the problems is that there are very few feminist groups on campus where I can go and discuss these problems so we can figure out what we want to do about it. For me, a problem isn’t named until a potential solution is named as well.

GWU Allows for Gender-Neutral Dorm Rooms

George Washington University will join the ranks of 54 other colleges and universities to allow gender-neutral dorm rooms. The push was started by numerous student groups, including Allied for Pride, who advocated on behalf of LGBT students who felt these gender-specific housing rules were unfair and discriminatory. What’s cool is that the university took the students’ proposal seriously and created committees working with administration and students to make it happen.

While most students think the change in regulations is a step in the right direction, there has been pushback by conservative students concerned that this infringes on their rights. I’m not too sure of the reasoning but this male student is quoted in the Washington Post:
