American Airlines bars a passenger from her flight for wearing a pro-choice t-shirt

A woman who tried to travel wearing a pro-choice t-shirt was barred from an American Airlines flight yesterday because of her fashion choice. According to RH Reality Check, she was coming home from a meeting of pro-choice activists, and was about to change planes for the second leg of her travel when this happened (this comes from an email sent to RH Reality Check):

Right before we were set to land the flight attendant from first class approaches me and asks if I had a connecting flight? We were running a bit behind schedule, so I figured I was being asked this to be sure I would make my connecting flight.  She then proceeded to tell me that I ...

Attitudes are the hardest thing to tailor

I used to love shopping. It was a big pastime for my family, and many of my best memories as a kid are centered on the shopping mall.

But even when I loved shopping for clothes, there was always that really terrible moment in the dressing room that would stick with me for months after the incident. That moment when, after trying on many cute-looking things on the rack, none of them looked good on my body. None.

If I couldn’t find clothes that looked good, that fit my body appropriately, I knew what the problem was immediately. It was me.

If only I lost a little weight, if only my belly shrunk some, THEN I would be a perfect size whatever and ...

What We Missed

Undocumented students who “came out” during the activism for the DREAM act are worried about being deported.

I have a piece up at Colorlines today about the sweeping anti-abortion attacks being led by the GOP around the country. Also, over at Radical Doula I write about my work as an abortion doula and the myths that about women’s abortion experiences.

Remember the Boyfriend Jean for women (and girls)? Well now, thanks to Levis, we’ve got the “Ex-Girlfriend” Jean for guys. Tell me this: Why does gender non-conformity in clothing have to be couched in heteronormative terminology? Cause you’d never want someone to think you were gay for wearing the other gender’s clothing ...

Online marketplace for gender variant folks in the works

(I find the logo to be a bit creepy–maybe it’s the dolls and the sunrise in the background?)

Sarah Dopp, the person behind the cool site Genderfork, has a new project in the works.

It’s called a “Genderplayful Marketplace” and the idea is to have a site, similar to etsy, where people can come together and sell clothing to one another. Sarah wants folks to have a space to trade and create clothing for gender variant folks, for bodies of all sizes and gender expressions. Sarah has already raised over $5000 from the online community toward this project, which shows just how wanted this kind of space is.

Genderplayful is a plan for an online ...

Young Feminist Enterpreneur spotlight: AuH2O

I had the awesome pleasure of meeting Kate Goldwater (pictured) this weekend (actually at Jill from Feministe‘s Holiday Party). Kate and I spent an hour or so talking about entrepreneurship and feminism, specifically focusing on her business AuH2O.

Kate and I are the same age (26) so I was hella impressed that she’s been running her own clothing boutique (featuring many of her own designs) for four years now.

I loved everything about AuH2O. The store is named such because it’s the chemical equivalent of her last name: Gold (Au) water (H2O). Perfect blend of nerdy and cool. It’s based on principles of recycling, and all the clothing and accessories sold are vintage or used, including the ...
