Chart of the Day: The pay gap for women of color

Earlier this week we got the terribly exciting news that, according to the latest Census numbers, the average American woman now makes 78 cents, instead of 77 cents, to the average dude’s dollar. But, as we know, the gap–which hasn’t improved in a decade–varies a lot by race.

Although several cities mandate universal paid sick leave, for the most part, such policies are left to employers. And while they’ve been slightly more generous in the last few years, more than 41 million people in this country can’t take a paid day off when they or their family members are sick, according to a new report from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

In previous years we’ve covered why the Olympics aren’t exactly a feminist institution, even though the competitions show up some pretty bad ass ladies. I had no idea, though, that the games — and particularly the Winter Olympics — were so resistant to including women for such a goddamn long time. Chart of the Day: Birth control efficacy

So, a few disclaimers. Huff Po put together an infographic on women’s birth control use and misconceptions about various methods’ efficacy based on new data from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. There are some problems here. I don’t like that the focus is solely on women because not all people who can get pregnant are women and the partners of those who can should also shoulder the burden of navigating BC options. I’m also not wild about the “What Women Say” vs. “What Science Says” set-up (Silly Moon Goddess of the Earth vs. Facts), which obscures the project’s central critique: our education and health care systems fail to inform people of their best options.
