Reminder: Don’t look at those stolen nude images of female celebs

No doubt you’ve heard by now of the Great Celebrity Naked Photo Leak of 2014. Thanks to an asshole hacker on 4chan, we now have proof that — as Roxane Gay notes — “beneath their clothes, celebrities are naked.” Shocking, I know. Here’s a reminder from Clementine Ford that the release of these stolen photos is a crime — and a violation that you are are participating in if you seek out and share the images.

In what’s being called the biggest celebrity hacking incident in internet history, more than 100 female celebrities have had their private nude images stolen and published online. The bulk of the images posted have been officially confirmed as belonging to Jennifer Lawrence, but a ...

Why Bruce Willis & Demi Moore’s daughter wants us to see her nipples

The media is quick to mock and dismiss Scout Willis’s topless protest against Instagram and her campaign to “Free The Nipple.” But if more celebrities used their social media, high profiles and boobs the way Scout Willis did, the world would be a better place. Because as Willis herself knows, the issue is bigger than her own nipples.

Is that photo of Willow Smith a) inappropriate or b) no big deal?

Trick question — the correct answer is c) not your concern.

Willow Smith and all of her #blackgirlmagic have put people’s proverbial tits in a twirl once again. This time it’s because a photo of her in bed with shirtless 20-year-old actor Moises Arias was posted online. The former Hannah Montana star is a mutual friend of Willow, her older brother Jaden, and Jaden’s bae, Kendall Jenner (a piece of celebrity news I didn’t know). As you can see, they aren’t touching or engaged in any way, but they’re in a bed, and he’s not wearing a shirt. So per usual, the internet has lots of things to say, most of it about inappropriateness and “raised eyebrows.” ...

Drunk in (same) love: 2014 Grammys open thread

I’m still feeling some type of way about the Grammys since they gave a platform to a known perpetrator of domestic violence. But I do think they’re worth interrogating as a cultural touchstone reflecting the most popular and commercially successful music of today. That’s a long way of saying: here’s an open thread for your Monday morning! What do you think about last night’s Grammy Awards?

What’s really driving our interest in celebrity pregnancies?

I all but ignored the recent confirmation and (social)media frenzy over Kate Middleton’s pregnancy. For one, I’ve never really been into princesses; and for two, she is only one of 208 million women that will become pregnant this year alone. She’s not exactly trendsetting.

But I thought about it a little more when I came across this witty article in HuffPo, detailing the 9 most scrutinized uteri in recent history. They do a great job of highlighting the fat shaming and gender policing that the public inflicts on celebrities surrounding their fertility. We have historically used motherhood as a way to measure and define the worth of women. And only in pregnancy do we allow women ...

Five insidious victim-blaming tactics being used against Halle Berry

On Thanksgiving Halle Berry’s current boyfriend apparently fought with and badly bruised the face of Halle Berry’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child. If you’d like more information about the situation, here is a summary of everything that happened.

As dramatic and concerning as these developments are (I feel bad for pretty much everyone involved and am generally bummed to see violence take place), perhaps most disturbing of all is the insidious if not predictable victim-blaming that has taken hold in the days since the violent incident. Because Berry has been a victim of domestic violence in the past, you see, it is OBVS all her fault when anyone around her engages in violence.

For those of you who don’t ...

Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd nails patriarchy

Her analysis may fall short when it comes to hip hop, but Ashley Judd just nailed an important part of how patriarchy functions. This comes from a column at The Daily Beast in which Judd responds to criticism of her apparently “puffy” appearance. Judd calls out the way the attacks come from women as well as men:

That women are joining in the ongoing disassembling of my appearance is salient. Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny ...
