Pantene says you can wash that sexism right out of your hair


Don’t you hate it how people are labelled differently for engaging in the same behaviour? What’s “persuasive” in a man is labelled “pushy” in a woman. A father who stays up all night working is “dedicated,” but a woman who does that is “selfish.” That is, like,  so unfair. Luckily, that problem has a solution. And I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that the solution to that problem, which uptight complainy feminists might call “sexism” but that this ad calls “labels,”  isn’t “collective political action and widespread cultural change.” The solution is shampoo.

On autism, feminism, and human value

Of all the things I’ve learned from working alongside and reading the work of amazing disability justice activists, one of my biggest ah-hah moments was when they helped me make connections between the ways bodies are valued (or aren’t) and their ability to produce capital. It’s a very common trope, that of the good, “productive” person – with “productive” having very specific meanings under capitalism. This piece by Bridget Allen hits on those themes and particularly connects the ways some feminisms have been complicit in this narrative:

Has feminism really become capitalism’s handmaiden?

Has feminism become capitalism’s handmaiden? That’s what Nancy Fraser argues in a really fascinating piece over at The Guardian, claiming that feminist ideas have been used in the rise of neoliberalism:

Behold the spectacle that is poverty! NYC bus tour offers the “ghetto” as an attraction

The Black Youth Project reported that a bus tour in New York City called Real Bronx Tours was apparently offering its patrons the opportunity to see what what a “real ghetto” looks like. They ride through the Bronx, a New York borough that is heavily populated with poor people of color, making fun of residents and wowing their audience with stories about how dangerous the neighborhood is.

This is obviously problematic in more ways than one. On the surface level, it doesn’t seem to be a service worth its money. According to someone on the tour:

Fat/Slut Shaming and the Meritocracy Myth

Yesterday, a post on Feministe by guestblogger wickedday sparked an entirely fascinating and important conversation on  the connections between slut-shaming and fat-shaming, and, later, on the effects that capitalism has historically had on this process, and continues to have. I was hipped to the conversation via the contributions of a dear friend of mine and prolific feminist blogger Katie Loncke.
