Phyllis Schlafly says too many women in college is driving campus sexual violence

In my more youthful and energetic days, I read and reviewed an entire book co-authored by Phyllis Schlafly, a rather absurd endeavor given that Schlafly’s worldview is hopelessly incoherent, hypocritical, and fantastical, but which left me with an enduring fascination with the career anti-feminist, who is still at it at age 90.

On Rolling Stone, lessons from fact-checking, and the limits of journalism

It was as both a feminist and former fact-checker that I watched with rage on Friday as Rolling Stone distanced themselves from the account of a gang rape at UVA they published last month, covering for their own journalistic missteps by throwing Jackie, the rape survivor at the center of the piece, under the bus. And the rage is only growing as many of the journalists now rushing to condemn Rolling Stone are starting to spin a tale of how a “Believe the Victims” mentality got in the way of good journalism in this case.

How can anyone push survivors to report to the police this week?

The irony is nauseating. In major media outlets you could find, right next to each other, articles about the grand jury decision not to indict the cop who murdered Eric Garner and Virginia’s plans to push more victims into the criminal justice system.

Over 20 Colleges and Universities Fail to Comply with New Anti-Violence Law

As part of a broader campaign to highlight the reality of dating violence on campus, students and survivors recently took to Twitter to put pressure on their schools to comply with the new Campus SaVE provisions of the Clery Act, passed as part of the 2013 VAWA reauthorization. In addition to older requirements that colleges and universities disclose incidents of sexual assault, the new provisions mandate that schools publicly disclose the number of reports of dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking received each year, beginning with a “good faith effort” this calendar year. Schools were required to publish these reports by October 1st, 2014 but, ...

UChicago misogynists threaten sexual assault survivors and activists over release of ‘rapist list’

Last year, the Department of Education opened an investigation of the University of Chicago after a complaint alleged that gender-based violence and harassment were rampant on campus, and that the University was doing little to stop it. Yesterday a group calling itself the UChicago Electronic Army (UEA) provided a good case in point. The UEA hacked the University of Chicago MODA fashion website in order to send a threatening message to campus survivors, activists, and allies:

UEA’s message, which is no longer online, was a response to the release of the Hyde Park List. As Dana reported on Monday, “concerned citizens” posted the names of several “people known to commit varying levels of gender-based violence” at the school. (After initially being removed ...
