Quick Hit: On teets, tots and spats

Our own Jessica Valenti has a must-read about how shaming women who can’t or don’t want to breastfeed — and choose to use formula — is really fucking problematic (something she’s experienced recently):

I support breastfeeding women – long before I had my daughter I was blogging about the heinous lack of resources for breastfeeding mothers and the various ways they are discriminated against. I think we need mandated paid maternity leave, insurance that pays for lactation consultants and breast pumps, employers who are required to have a space and breaks for pumping moms, hospital- and state-funded breastfeeding support groups and more. But I also believe that formula ...

Behind on your holiday shopping? Looking for a great gift/cause to support? I’ve got two for you:

The first is a t-shirt made by means of production apparel. It reads: “The Hyde Amendment: Denying women the right to abortion since 1976!” It’s a benefit for the National Network of Abortion Funds, and it’s an awesome t-shirt to boot. Go here for details.

This calendar comes from the SF worker’s rights group who did the amazing bad hotel flash mob. It’s called “Limp Wrists, Raised Fists” and looks awesome. Details here.

President Obama orders new federal breastfeeding policy

Although breastfeeding private and public sector workers’ rights are included in the new health care reform law, President Obama has requested guidelines be implemented for federal employees:

President Obama is asking federal personnel officials to draft “appropriate workplace accommodations” for federal employees who are nursing mothers.

The president issued a memo Monday to the Office of Personnel Management, asking for new guidelines to be published when ready.

The order is required by the new health-care reform law, which mandates new breastfeeding rights primarily for hourly workers in the private and public sectors. But Obama asked the federal govenrment to go a step farther by establishing new guidelines for all federal employees, no matter their ...

Breastfeeding: It Does a Body Good (as in, makes it look better)

It looks like the New York State Department of Health is trying to encourage breastfeeding (yay!) by telling women they’ll totally lose sooo much weight if they do! (Huh?)

Interesting how they succeed in mocking your run-of-the-mill diet commercial while still managing to say, as Sociological Images aptly put it: “[D]on’t ever forget, ladies: one of your main responsibilities as a new mom is to lose the weight as quickly as possible.”

Transcript after jump.

Breastfeeding activists boycott Old Navy

Via Strollerderby, we find that some lactivists aren’t happy about a new onesie on Old Navy shelves that reads, “Formula Powered.” In response, folks like Cate Nelson at Eco Child’s Play are telling moms they should boycott the store (and their accompanying Gap, Banana Republic, etc.) until they take the onesie down, which they say is empowering the formula industry. Nelson says:

We all know breastfeeding is best for baby…and mama. Formula simply isn’t the healthy option. So, why doesn’t Old Navy know it?

I’m no mama, but I am a breastfeeding advocate, believe in a mother’s right to breastfeed in public and at work, and am aware of how much the formula ...
