“Blurred Lines” remix feat. actual rapists’ words

*Trigger warning*

Well, sorta.

Like Ann, I’ll admit that Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” was a staple in my summer jamz rotation (at least until the new Katy Perry roared onto the scene). It’s not that I didn’t notice the super rapey lyrics, but I regularly enjoy pop culture that I could–and would–tear apart if I were writing a blog post instead of turning the volume up and the windows down. I don’t even feel guilty about it in the least. And I don’t actually agree that banning a song like “Blurred Lines” is the answer.

What I do believe in is deconstructing pop culture and being real about the ways it reflects, reinforces, and promotes ...

Quick Hit: University of Edinburgh bans “Blurred Lines”

Here’s proof that campuses don’t need to be the cesspools of misogynistic violence they so often prove themselves to be.

The University of Edinburgh has banned Robin Thicke’s summer rape anthem “Blurred Lines,” also known as “No Means Yes, the Musical.” The Independent reports:

Featuring lyrics such as ‘I’ll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two’, the American’s international number one has sparked widespread criticism of sexism and been accused of referring to non-consensual sex in lines like ‘I hate these blurred lines, I know you want it’…

Video: best pro-choice Blurred Lines cover EVER

OK. this video may be the only pro-choice version of Robin Thicke’s highly problematic Blurred Lines music video. But if there were more out there, this one would still be one of the best! It’s created by Full Frontal Freedom, which describes itself as “a coalition of independent artists and media folks – who want to use our talents to promote civic engagement.” The very funny lyrics, which were amazingly provided on the Youtube page, are after the jump.

Mod Carousel remakes “Blurred Lines”–but does it subvert the misogyny?

Yesterday, Lindy West at Jezebel introduced the feminist blogosphere to this maybe brilliant “Blurred Lines” re-do from Mod Carousel. I say “maybe brilliant” because I really want to be into the video, which is fun and sexy and cheeky, and because disagreeing with everyone I follow on Twitter is scary. I can almost convince myself based on the “everything is better queer” rationale, but I’m hung up on two things.

Firstly, why are the guys so feminized, while the extent of the women’s masculinization stops at a pantsuit? I’m all for men in make-up, and appreciate the troupe’s mission “to show a spectrum of sexuality as well as present both women and men in a positive ...

Blurring the lines of hetero male fantasies

I’m completely out of the loop, and wasn’t aware that Robin Thicke has the song of the summer with his hit “Blurred Lines.” Until recently, I had only heard the song once. A while back, I saw the uncensored version, which features a number of naked and otherwise half-dressed women participating in various activities, but mostly prancing around to the delight of Thicke, Pharrell and T.I. I didn’t think much of it at the time.

(That’s the “fully” clothed version). And I didn’t think much of it because it seemed standard fare. For most male artists, the music video is an outlet for their hetero male fantasies. A naked woman walking in front of balloons plastered to a wall that read ...
