Last night, upon our first meeting, I gave bell my book Redefining Realness, and she surprised me at breakfast this AM by having read the entire book. She actually read passages to the audience! It was a transformative experience for both of us, as black women from different generations ...

After the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot an unarmed African-American teenager, the following words of the feminist, intellectual, activist, teacher bell hooks spread like wild fire across social media.

The growing number of gated communities in our nation is but one example of the obsession with safety…. The person who is really the threat here is the home owner who has been so well socialized by the thinking of white supremacy, of capitalism, of patriarchy that he can no longer respond rationally.

The Feministing Five: Una Aya Osato

Una Aya Osato has been a performer all her life. But she didn’t become a writer until she realized that she had to become one. Unhappy with the limited roles available for women of color and specifically Asian women, Osato decided to write her own shows and own roles. The rest, as they say, is history, and over the last nine years, Una has written, performed and toured internationally with five one-woman-shows. Oh, yeah, and she’s also won awards and received critical acclaim. So there’s that, too!
