Quick Hit: Susan Rice selected as National Security Advisor

Susan Rice was selected by President Obama as the National Security Advisor, replacing Tom Donilon. She is the second woman to hold the position (following fellow black woman, and fellow Rice-last named Condoleezza Rice) and the third African American, the first being Colin Powell.

The decision is already receiving backlash from Republican lawmakers who believe that the handling of the Benghazi attacks shows her lack of judgement. Her “temperament” was also called into question when she was considered for the Secretary of State position after Hilary Clinton resigned.

It’s a good thing the Senate has absolutely no say so in this appointment. For the win.

Republican Congressman attacks Sasha and Malia Obama

First it was the NRA, and now it’s Republican Congressman Steve King’s (R-IA) turn to attack the Obama girls.  It all started when Breitbart.com bucked traditional protocol of never revealing the location of the First Daughters who spent their spring break in the Bahamas, for obvious security reasons.

I thought I made myself clear before when I said that Sasha and Malia Obama should be off limits.  Where are the responsible members of the GOP?  When something like this happens it shouldn’t only be liberals and feminist bloggers calling it out.  Republicans need to check their own folks, who don’t seem to have much sense not to attack two young women who are just enjoying their lives ...

Obama opposes Boy Scouts gay ban, homophobes support it

In a pre-Superbowl interview President Obama came out against the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on “gays.” CBS’s Scott Pelley said, “next week the board of the Boy Scouts of America is going to vote on whether to end their national ban on gays in scouting. Should scouting be open to the gays?” And Obama’s response was unequivocal: “Yes.” When asked, “why so,” Obama explained,

“My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life. And The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think ...

Obama to include same-sex couples in his immigration proposal

BuzzFeed is reporting that President Obama will include same-sex couples in the immigration reform proposal he will present today in Las Vegas. He is scheduled to deliver his speech, which you can watch live here, at 2:55.

According to BuzzFeed,

A Democratic source said: “Same-sex couples will be part of his proposal.” A second source confirmed that, unlike the Senate framework released Monday, same-sex bi-national couples — those with one American and one foreign partner — will be included in the White House principles.

Even when legally married under state law, LGBTQ American citizens are unable to confer citizenship on their spouses. Because foreign spouses are unable to receive green cards that heterosexual foreign spouses would be eligible for, LGBTQ bi-national couples are ...

Quick hit: Obama named TIME 2012 Person of the Year

The completely warranted if somewhat safe pick is accompanied by a lovely longform profile that manages to add new dimensions to a now well-worn story of Obama’s journey from Chicago community organizer to re-elected president and historical icon. The profile emphasizes the role that women, minorities, and young people played in electing Barack Obama both times.

Also notable: Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani activist who was shot in the head by the Taliban for her crusade for better girls’ education, was named runner up.

Check out the whole feature here.

Why 34 mentions of Israel got me trashed last night

Before last night’s debate, I created a little drinking game for myself and anyone who wanted to join. The instructions were to drink every time Israel was mentioned and drink twice every time the candidate emphasized how close he was with Israel and/or its Prime Minister or criticized his opponent for not being close enough. I had no idea how intoxicating and expensive this drinking game would be. Because it turns out that during the debate, Israel was mentioned 34 times!

I was too trashed from all the Israel mentions to keep track of how many times the candidates praised Israel or accused each other of not hearting Israel sufficiently, so I had to check the transcript.

The gender gap in presidential politics approaches an all-time high

According to Nate Silver, the gender gap in this year’s election could rival the 20-point high in the 2000 election between Bush and Gore:

Weird. Wonder if this has anything to do with that “war on women” that totally doesn’t exist.
