Victory! White House task force unveils new recommendations to end campus sexual assault

If you read Feministing regularly you probably know about the work of Know Your IX and its ED ACT NOW campaign, which are fighting for Title IX enforcement to combat sexual violence on college campuses. Feministing’s own Alexandra, Wagatwe, and Suzanna are leaders in this campaign, and recently brought their demands all the way to the White House.

Last night, the new White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault released its first report, announcing that it was adopting many of the policy ideas developed and demanded by these BAMFs, and making resources and data available at a new

Feministing is 10 years old!

Happy birthday to us!

Feministing turned 10 this Saturday, April 12, a real milestone for any website. We’re so old our first site was on Movable Type. We’re two years older than Twitter, and Facebook only beat us by a couple months. We can’t wait to start the 5th grade this fall!

Feministing’s come a long way in the last decade. Jessica and Vanessa Valenti originally founded the site because of a lack of spaces dedicated to young feminist voices. Since then, the feminist internet has grown into a political and social force to be reckoned with. And Feministing has evolved as well, from a scrappy web log to the most widely read feminist publication of all time with a large and diverse roster of brilliant ...

According to NPR, some sellers of sporting equipment  have noticed an increase in bow and arrow sales since the first movie was released in 2012. And over the past 2 years, membership in USA Archery has doubled. One girl’s experience with the sport is described here.

CodePink projects drone documentary onto DHS secretary candidate’s house

Jeh Johnson, the Obama administration’s pick to head the Department of Homeland Security, is a relatively obscure figure. While some on the left are fans because of his involvement in the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, anti-war activist group CodePink wants to bring attention to the fact that he created the legal justification for the Obama administration’s drone policy. So last night, the group screened a documentary about drones on the side of his house.

Natalie Portman: Feminist characters are more than just “kick ass”

In an interview with Elle, Natalie Portman describes what feminism is for her, as an actress:

I want every version of a woman and a man to be possible. I want women and men to be able to be full-time parents or full-time working people or any combination of the two. I want both to be able to do whatever they want sexually without being called names. I want them to be allowed to be weak and strong and happy and sad — human, basically. The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a “feminist” story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman ...
