Happy Birthday Suzanna!

Today is Suzanna’s birthday!

Suzanna Bobadilla is our new interviews contributor. She’s been posting great conversations, including ones with Samantha Geimer, author and the woman caught in the firestorm of the Polanski rape case, writer and organizer Suey Park, Senator Gretchen Whitmer, Sunny Clifford, the subject of Young Lakota, Anna Saini from The Red Umbrella Diaries, planetary scientist Sara Seager, Law and Order: SVU star Mariska Hargatay, and our former Executive Editor Samhita.

Suzanna’s also one of the badass organizers working to end campus sexual assault who have gotten the federal government, including the White House, to take action.

Here’s some fun facts about Suzanna: ...

Need a safe place to pee? There’s an app for that

Worrying about finding a safe place to use the bathroom should never be an issue in anyone’s life. But for far too many trans and gender non-conforming folks, bathrooms can be potential sites of fear, gender policing, and even violence. The right to bathroom access is important and taken for granted by most people – having to hold it can lead to dangerous health outcomes. Refuge Restrooms is a brand-new app designed to address these issues. Launched last week and already receiving lots of positive attention, the app catalogs restrooms that have been deemed safe to use, and folks can add to and update the list all the time.

Teagan Widmer created and launched ...

Welcome Katherine!

I am beyond excited to welcome Katherine Cross as our newest guest writer. I’ve been a fan of Katherine’s nerdy brilliance for a while. She’s had writing at Feministing before, but now she’ll be joining us on a more regular basis. Here’s some more info about her:

Katherine Cross is a pizza loving feminist sociologist, trans Latina, and amateur slug herder, working on her PhD at the CUNY Graduate Centre. When she’s not studying or gaming she can be found at the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. Her blog can be found at quinnae.com and her writing has also appeared in Women’s Studies Quarterly, Bitch Magazine, Questioning Transphobia, and Kotaku. She is a co-editor of the Border House.

Please join me and ...

CeCe McDonald and Laverne Cox

Photo of the day: CeCe McDonald released from prison

CeCe McDonald was released from prison today, almost a year before originally expected. CeCe was arrested and faced an unfair trial for defending herself and her friends from a racist and transmisogynist attack. That’s CeCe in the photo above — and yes, that’s Orange is the New Black star and all around badass Laverne Cox sitting next to her. Laverne Cox is making a documentary about Cece’s case — you can support the film here.

Check out Janet Mock’s beautiful open letter to CeCe McDonald upon her release, and the hashtag #BecauseofCeCe discussing learning, growth, and change that’s happened because of this inspiring activist who never stopped fighting for her community, ...

Happy Birthday Sesali!

Today is Sesali’s birthday!

Sesali and I first met early on in our national organizing days, and you don’t even know how excited I was when she rocked our contributor contest in 2012. In addition to her role as a Contributor at Feministing, Sesali is a National Campus Organizer at Planned Parenthood – she was on the ground in Albuquerque to help defeat their 20 week abortion ban this November.

Sesali’s always bringing the brilliance and visionary, original thinking to our blog. I love talking about social justice issues through a pop culture lens, and so does Sesali: she’s used Scandal to talk about trafficking tropes and respectability politics, called out American Horror Story: Coven‘s approach to race, and got deep about Beyonce’s ...

Quick hit: Meet the first three women Marines to graduate from infantry training

When it was announced earlier this year that the US military would be opening up to women combat positions that had previously been off-limits for them, I heard the same skeptical, sometimes sexism-veiling refrain over and over again: I’m fine with women doing these jobs, as long as they can pass the same physical tests as the guys. Well, meet the first handful of women Marines who have done just that:

Photo of the Day: Lakota grandmothers capture neo-Nazi flag

Leith, North Dakota is a small town with only 24 residents. Recently, the town has been targeted for takeover by a group of neo-Nazis, who are trying to make it a haven for white supremacists. According to NPR, white supremacist Craig Cobb has already purchased 12 properties, and has given most of them to other white supremacists. Cobb has said he wants to fly flags of the “formerly white nations of Europe” over the town:

“It would be extraordinarily beautiful when people enter the town, particularly at night,” Cobb says. “We will probably have the National Socialist hunting flag with stag horns and a very small swastika in the center — very discreet.”

This past weekend, he invited members of the ...
