Another Indiana woman is being charged with feticide after seeking medical help

A few years after Indiana tried to charge Bei Bei Shuai with feticide after she attempted suicide, the state is now going after another woman for the crime.

Purvi Patel went to the ER with vaginal bleeding after delivering a fetus at home. Initially, prosecutors charged Patel with “felony neglect,” claiming the fetus was born alive and then subsequently died. But now they’ve decided to add a charge for “feticide” – that way, if the fetus was stillborn, as Patel claims, they’ll still hold her accountable since she admitted to taking drugs to try to self-abort. As Sally Kohn writes at the Daily Beast, the two charges directly contradict each other.

Congressional candidate sends “prevent abortion” condoms to anti-choice group

Count me as an ardent supporter of Arizona congressional candidate James Woods. When the pro-choice Democrat received a survey from the National Pro-Life Alliance asking him to pledge his support for the “sanctity of life,” he send back a box of condoms that read “prevent abortion” along with this letter.

According to a new study from the University of Cincinnati, residents of blue and red states are pretty much equally, scarily uninformed about abortion’s legality, risks, and prevalence. Ireland denies suicidal rape survivor an abortion and forces her to undergo a C-section

Ireland’s abortion law drew international outrage after the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar a couple years ago. The attention, combined with the long-term advocacy of local and international human rights organizations, spurred the government to ever-so-slightly loosen its restrictions to allow abortion “when there is a real and substantial risk to the life of the mother, including the threat of suicide over a pregnancy.” But the new law didn’t help this teenager:

Undercover audio of Texas anti-choice training session shows how the movement relies on intimidation and harassment

As anti-choice legislation is increasingly wrapped in the friendly (and dishonest) guise of “patient safety” and anti-choice protestors carefully attempt to rebrand themselves as “sidewalk counselors,” it may be easy for some to forget that harassment and intimidation still play a vital role in the anti-choice movement’s overall strategy.

But NARAL Pro-Choice Texas and Progress Texas have released this undercover audio of a training session hosted by several anti-choice groups at the Texas state capitol earlier this month which shows that, behind closed doors, they’re very upfront about their goal — “keeping abortion facilities closed” — and tactics, which include tracking license plates and physical descriptions of providers and patients, intimidating women into canceling their appointments, and searching tax records to find new clinic ...

The Satantic Temple uses Hobby Lobby ruling to claim religious exemption from anti-choice biased counseling laws

Citing the Hobby Lobby ruling, the Satanic Temple is claiming a religious exemption from the anti-choice “informed consent” laws that require abortion providers in 35 states to give out biased, sometimes false, information about the procedure.

Given that “the Supreme Court has decided that religious beliefs are so sacrosanct that they can even trump scientific fact,” the Temple says it expects its “deeply held belief” will be respected. After all, unlike Hobby Lobby’s, their belief is even based on actually accurate information.

Legal abortion rate in Texas dropped 13 percent after new anti-choice restrictions

That’s according to a new study on the impact of the anti-choice restrictions that have now forced 46 percent of Texas’ legal abortion providers to close.

As we already know, the omnibus law passed last year–which also placed stricter restrictions on medication abortions and banned the procedure after 20 weeks–has dealt a disastrous blow to abortion access. The number of Texans living more than 200 miles from a provider has increased nearly 30-fold over the past year–from 10,000 to 290,000. And the new study shows it’s had an effect on the abortion rate as well. In the 6 months after the law went into effect, there was a 13 percent decrease in the legal abortion rate ...
