Feministing Reads: Angela Y. Davis’s Freedom is A Constant Struggle

“I understand that Hillary Clinton spoke at a church in Florissant, a few days ago, some five miles from Ferguson, where she insisted that ‘All lives matter.’ Does she not realize the extent to which such universal proclamations have always bolstered racism?”

Nas and “The Woman’s Mafia”

I’ve been thinking more than I should a lot about Nas dubbing feminism “The Woman’s Mafia.” Predictably, there was a bit of a backlash after he posted this contextless comment on Twitter, in part because the meaning was so unclear. The barbs that followed took shoots at Nas’ perceived lack of intelligence, as well as jokes about bell hooks going to the studio to record a diss track. His tweet left me, like many others, confused. For one, he had just spent more than an hour in conversation with Angela Davis, feminist legend, and she discussed adopting a feminist lens as a way of looking at the prison industrial complex and the issue of mass incarceration. Maybe he just ...

Angela Davis talks prison abolition on Democracy Now

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af1gQpkpk6Q

Angela Davis is for sure one of my activist icons. Her longevity in the movement, her commitment to radical politics and her wisdom have been incredible to witness. The intro into Amy Goodman’s (swoon) interview lays out some of the highlights of her activist career (watch it here).

In this segment on Democracy Now, Davis addresses what many have come to call the crisis of mass incarceration in the United States. We now incarcerate more people than any country in the world–and the rates are only continuing to rise. Her push for prison abolition is informed by her own time inside. This month marks the 40th anniversary of her incarceration. She was acquitted of all charges in 1972 and ...
