Daddy I Do: Documentary on Purity Balls and Abstinence-Only Culture

Via Jessica, it looks like there is a newish documentary on Purity Balls and abstinence-only programs — and lawdy, does it look compelling. It’s been screened thus far at a number of film festivals, winning a ton of awards. Let’s hope it really exposes the dangerous and shaming consequences that abstinence-only programs and purity-pushing has on young people — particularly girls.

Legislation introduced to end abstinence-only funding!

It’s an exciting time for anyone who thinks it’s important for young people to have access to information about sex and sexuality. Yesterday, Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) introduced legislation that would finally end federal funding for abstinence-only programs.

The Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act would strike the Title V Abstinence Only Program from the Social Security Act, eliminating $50 million a year in funding for these dangerous programs. Funding would be transferred to the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) state-grant program. PREP programs are evidence-based, required to address both abstinence and contraception and include information about adult preparation topics like healthy relationships, adolescent development, financial literacy, educational and career ...

Holy Hypocrite of the Day: Gov. Tim Pawlenty

Maya calls Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty out on his blatant hypocrisy this week — apparently the governor has turned down a $850,000 federal grant for sex education in the name of “striving to find ways to stop” health care reform in his state.

The thing is, Timmy boy has no problems whatsoever accepting a health care reform-sponsored $500,000 grant for abstinence-only programs — $379,000 of which needs to be matched by state funds. Says Maya:
