Christian college fires employee for becoming pregnant & offers job to her boyfriend

A California woman was fired after her supervisor at a San Diego Christian college asked her if she was pregnant. The sin, so to speak, was not the pregnancy itself but the fact that Teri James, 29, was not married when she conceived. This violated San Diego Christian College’s “community covenant,” signed by a not yet pregnant James, which is a two-page contract asking its employees and students to abstain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco and “abusive anger, malice, jealousy, lust, sexually immoral behavior including premarital sex, adultery, pornography and homosexuality, evil desires and prejudice based on race, sex or socioeconomic status.” Well, the prejudice part is nice, at least.

James, who is herself  Christian, is suing the school ...

Governor Walker repeals equal pay, bans abortion coverage, mandates abstinence

Wisconsin Governor (R-surprise!) Scott Walker is a true Renaissance Man of Asshatery. He must be commended for his hard work, consistency and brazen bigotry in targeting not just workers‘ rights, not just reproductive rights, but even pay equity! Thursday, Walker passed over 50 bills   but announced them Friday afternoon before the holiday weekend, so they would get less attention. Among the bills was

a bill banning abortion coverage in policies obtained through a health insurance exchange, which will be created in 2014. a bill requiring doctors to consult and examine a woman seeking abortion privately, away from her friends and family, and to make sure she isn’t being pressured into having an abortion. a bill requiring sex-ed teachers ...

Amplify Your Voice launches video series on abstinence-only programs

This is just so bad-ass, I can hardly contain my glee. The folks at Amplify Your Voice have taken it upon themselves to put together their own web video series using Xtranormal to expose the ridiculousness of abstinence-only programs. Here is their first of hopefully many with a FTW title: “Drink the Spit.”

Daddy I Do: Documentary on Purity Balls and Abstinence-Only Culture

Via Jessica, it looks like there is a newish documentary on Purity Balls and abstinence-only programs — and lawdy, does it look compelling. It’s been screened thus far at a number of film festivals, winning a ton of awards. Let’s hope it really exposes the dangerous and shaming consequences that abstinence-only programs and purity-pushing has on young people — particularly girls.

Legislation introduced to end abstinence-only funding!

It’s an exciting time for anyone who thinks it’s important for young people to have access to information about sex and sexuality. Yesterday, Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) introduced legislation that would finally end federal funding for abstinence-only programs.

The Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act would strike the Title V Abstinence Only Program from the Social Security Act, eliminating $50 million a year in funding for these dangerous programs. Funding would be transferred to the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) state-grant program. PREP programs are evidence-based, required to address both abstinence and contraception and include information about adult preparation topics like healthy relationships, adolescent development, financial literacy, educational and career ...

Holy Hypocrite of the Day: Gov. Tim Pawlenty

Maya calls Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty out on his blatant hypocrisy this week — apparently the governor has turned down a $850,000 federal grant for sex education in the name of “striving to find ways to stop” health care reform in his state.

The thing is, Timmy boy has no problems whatsoever accepting a health care reform-sponsored $500,000 grant for abstinence-only programs — $379,000 of which needs to be matched by state funds. Says Maya:

The decision was (unsurprisingly) condemned by all the people who make it their business to know and care about adolescent health and was supported by one Tom Prichard, head of the Minnesota Family Council, who ...
