Nobody said that pornography causes sexual violence. I think when that term is used, they are talking about people who have been victims in the industry. As in, sex workers who have been abused in their line of work. The ones who have been trafficked. And it can be argued that while pornography doesn’t necessarily [...]

I’ve also noticed that she’s not referred to as an independent entity. Nope. It’s “Pistorius’ Girlfriend” or “Olympic Star’s Girlfriend.” She’s talked about in reference to what she meant to him, not as her own person.

Exactly! Being fat should not be presented as an obstacle to being a good singer/getting a good job/doing well in schooling. When a thin person does things like that, no one calls a bunch of attention to them being thin. They are just treated like a regular person who did something good for their lives. [...]

I guess it feels more like Hollywood writers that do this are trying to get praise and attention for themselves more than anything else. Like a kid who got an A on a math paper and bragged to the whole class about it. “Look at us! We included fat people in our scripts! Look at [...]

I don’t think it’s being “nice” so much as throwing a bone with a condescending pat on the head. I don’t see how being treated like a normal person is the same as anonymity or nonexistence. I don’t really understand where you’re getting that idea here. What I mean is, why can’t it be “This person [...]

To simplify my point, fat does not mean incapable. And it shouldn’t be assumed that a fat person is incapable of being great just because of their size. It’s never assumed that a thin character is incapable because of being thin. So why should that negative assumption be placed on a fat person?

I feel like you either didn’t read the rest of the blog, or completely missed the point. Thin people are far and away more, and better, represented in media. When a thin person in media achieves something, it’s expected. It’s no surprise. The audience knows that was going to happen anyway and the audience is [...]

Today my sister came over. I came downstairs to find her talking with my mom about some Disney channel show they were allowing my niece to watch. The way they were talking about it, I was wondering why they were letting my niece sit in front of it. They were talking about the fat character [...]

I agree, she was failed. By the teachers who did nothing to the girl who beat her up, the police who didn’t put her stalker behind bars, and her fellow students who would not leave her alone even after she moved schools twice. There’s so much talk lately of bullying prevention and resistance to bullies, [...]

So I often see stuff on my facebook feed about resisting bullying, how guys should treat girls, how girls expect to be treated by guys, and a varying cornucopia of other photos, phrases and gifs. “Like if you’re against bullying” printed across a picture of a crying girl, with a group of other girls pointing [...]

  • Personally, I think that forcing someone to have a baby against their will is a form of rape in and of itself. Simply because rape is often not actually about sex or sexual attraction, but about control of another human being. Taking that person’s life freedom and soul and strangling it. The victim of rape [...]

  • Veronica commented on the blog post Louisiana School claims “We didn’t know it was Illegal”   2 years, 2 months ago · View

That’s a shame. :( I can believe that a lot of the students don’t know that it’s illegal, because sometimes students just don’t know what their rights are (which is also a shame) but I can understand a student not knowing. I could also see a lot of students knowing it’s wrong, or actually knowing [...]

  • Veronica wrote a new blog post: Louisiana School claims “We didn’t know it was Illegal”   2 years, 2 months ago · View

It recently came out in the news…well, not in wide, mainstream news (though I think it should have) that a school in Louisiana, Delhi Charter School, was requiring girls to take pregnancy tests, and kicking out girls who either refused, or who were pregnant. I learned about this through the aclu website linked by Unitewomen.org. [...]

  • Personally, I have never found Daniel Tosh funny. He laughs at his own really poorly delivered “jokes” and the videos he has on his show are mainly of people getting really hurt, and he makes fun of that. So he makes fun of people getting seriously injured and thinks that it would be funny of [...]

  • I’m going to have to agree with Maya here. You pretty much just said what’s wrong with it in your own post. Male athletes are held to a standard of skill. Appearance is secondary. No one watches male athletes to judge their physical appearance and level of beauty on top of their skills. When someone [...]

Oh totally, I’m aware that married women are inequally favored in social standing. No doubt about that. I mean, look at the crap that Tracy McMillan spews against single women (blech). I just don’t think the way to balance that out and make it more of an equal playing field is to rail against it [...]

Hehe, thanks! My fiance was like, “Can we?!” After I showed him that. :)

  • Veronica wrote a new blog post: Opinions on marriage   2 years, 4 months ago · View

I’m getting married next year. Something I’m really excited about. We’ve had a long engagement, so we’re really getting ants in our pants about finally being legally husband and wife. We are really happy together and really looking forward to being married. But according to some people, and I’ve seen this kind of sentiment rising [...]

I just graduated with my first degree. And in one of my last classes, we had to do presentations on Eastern religions (Hindusim, Taoism, etc…it had to be something we talked about in class.) One of the students, a guy who liked to often talk about how he’s a computer science major and all that [...]

  • Veronica commented on the blog post Feminist=Man-hater?   2 years, 6 months ago · View

Exactly! You said precisely what I was trying to get across. I’m not mad at him, I’m frustrated at the fact that feminist statements are more powerful when men say them when they should be powerful no matter the gender of who is saying them. We say the same things, we believe in the same [...]
