This is the best poem I’ve read here, ever. Congratulations on not only having something meaningful to say (that, honestly, is the easy part), but also on the skill and craft to put it into a form that has structure and lyricism. A+++, would subscribe to your newsletter.

I think it’s perfectly fine for you to not be okay with this, and to view it as inappropriate and unhealthy. However, that doesn’t change your friend’s right to her own personal autonomy. The fact that she has entered into this relationship willingly and consensually is the relevant element. Is this relationship problematic, potentially damaging [...]

While I don’t want to put words in Sam L-L’s mouth, I think that this point is perfectly clear: stating that all evidence points towards men being less than human doesn’t sound especially well-intentioned, even if Dworkin tempers it by saying that she’ll keep believing in that humanity all the same. That’s not really an [...]

Now now Robin, let’s not let the actual facts get in the way of an awesome sound bite. =) For the record, here is the statement that Browne agreed with as being true: Soledad O’Brien: I’m going to read a little bit from this colonel who said this: ‘The army is not a sociological laboratory; to [...]

    Ah, yes. Trolls.

I’m not a fan of the NRA, but I think there’s some misinformation here. First of all, the game in the linked article didn’t use human targets, it used what the article described as “coffin-shaped targets” and what looked more like abstract semi-rectangular shapes than either humans or coffins. Secondly, it really seems like a [...]

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post Edmonton’s new rape prevention ads should be everywhere   1 year, 7 months ago · View

Rape is not sex – it’s violence. This is like saying “threatening someone isn’t communication – it’s violence.” These are not either/or situations. Rape is, almost by definition, forced or unwanted sex. That isn’t to say it isn’t also violence. In any case, AJ makes a very important point by noting that this attempt to define [...]

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post Weekly Feminist GIF   1 year, 7 months ago · View

This sounds quite a bit like “it’s just a joke, so how can you be offended?” I understand that it’s a one-liner and a gif. I get the joke. I even get that it’s kind of funny. What I don’t think is coming across is that this is your ” reaction in one specific context when [...]

I don’t care very much about what people who can’t get pregnant think about abortion. Okay, that’s kind of what I thought you were saying, and it’s exactly why I disagree. Adhering to this criteria means that post-menopausal women’s opinion are irrelevant, as are the opinions of infertile women of all types. I don’t think that [...]

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post Weekly Feminist GIF   1 year, 8 months ago · View

So, this is saying that the criteria for having a relevant opinion about abortion is what exactly?

I know these GIFs are supposed to be light hearted fun and all, but this one comes across as unfunny, inflammatory and poorly thought out. Abortion rights are important to everyone, consequently everyone’s opinion about them is relevant.

In other words, Virginia hopes to have a certain percentage of Asian students pass standard reading tests, while it hopes to have a lower percentage of Latino students pass reading tests. This doesn’t seem to be what the article says. The article actually specifically states that the required score to pass a test will vary by [...]

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post What if Shidea Lane wasn’t a woman of color?   1 year, 9 months ago · View

While Lane’s gender and race undoubtedly play a part both in her treatment by the driver and the internet response, you seem to be making some unwarranted assumptions about how these different events might have played out. I don’t know that it is reasonable to state that white males aren’t likely to be badgered about [...]

No worries. These sorts of conversations are always difficult to parse, especially over the web. I’m glad that we were able to eventually figure out what the other was trying to say. =)

Be well, and keep up the good fight.

My apologies for the lack of clarity on my end.

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post How to thoughtlessly consume whiteness   1 year, 11 months ago · View

However your first comment essentially argued that if I, a white person, acknowledge my heritage (which, unbeknownst to you, has been stolen from me and systematically erased by the very colonial government and dominant culture that did the same to the First Nations, on whose land I live), then I’m just doing this to look for [...]

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post How to thoughtlessly consume whiteness   1 year, 11 months ago · View

I’m absolutely not saying that we shouldn’t stop and think critically about what whiteness means. I’m saying that the points that you outlined above aren’t examples of “thoughtlessly consuming whiteness.”

  • unequivocal commented on the blog post How to thoughtlessly consume whiteness   1 year, 11 months ago · View

I really wanted to like this, but I’m afraid it has ended up just being a muddled mess. I think that the issue is that several of these points don’t have anything to do with “thoughtlessly consuming whiteness,” but are instead a matter of deliberately engaging in convoluted mental gymnastics in order to avoid owning [...]
