  • This was everything for me: “My point is that one man’s fulfilling, depression-alleviating friendship machine is another woman’s giant red flag.” Put that shit on a plaque. I don’t necessarily love the way this piece, the linked articles, and the comments in all of them prove the existence of the problem that Tait reports. But [...]

I think most people are pretty employable, honestly, but I don’t think employers are always operating as pure meritocracies right now. Getting a job can be such a crap shoot- you have the qualifications, but so do hundreds of other applicants, and some of them know someone in the company, or some of them worked [...]

Right now might be the wrong time to look into a phenomenon like that, because with the economy the way it is (and I live in a part of New York that always has job problems, now worse than ever) it would be pretty tough to convince me to take a risk with a job. [...]

I gotta say I am totally cool with period sex but reading that gal’s account…my god, she has some pretty fluffy periods if there’s really that little blood. Or maybe I just have horrifying period(sex)s.

  • I despise PETA, my feminist vegan sister! Vegans Against PETA should probably exist. I have a feeling that PETA is to blame for the fact that so many people associate vegan with “total asshole.” It is infuriating that the “public face” of the animal rights movement is a hypocritical, misogynist, body-policing, trivializing group such as [...]

I’ll take most anything over “dry humping.” Barf.

I have nothing to add, but I did enjoy reading this and I fully agree :)

Also, “dry humping” (the phrase, not the action!) is so revolting. Heavy petting? Too comical. Pre-fuck-thrusting? This just gets worse and worse. Can we get a French term to stand in for our nauseating English term?

Uh, just me, going through old-ass things on Feministing Community, telling you that you have the most awesome hyphenated last name ever. Seriously, your name sounds like a superheroine identity.

In my last semester of college, I was sitting in an anthropology/women’s studies class and another (female) student prefaced a statement with, “I know there’s that argument that men can be raped, but I don’t think I buy that.” Mid-sentence, she waved her hand in further dismissal of the idea. I was so flabbergasted that [...]

I am also a little lacking in feminist companionship- my bestest feminist friend in the whole wide world is moving to Germany in a few short weeks, too! :/ It can be infuriating to go through life with people alternately walking on eggshells around you and then openly mocking you and dismissing your concerns. I [...]

Someone just did a similar post about how people treat married vs. unmarried couples: http://community.feministing.com/2011/07/28/some-personal-feminist-thoughts-on-marriage-and-what-is-considered-a-socially-acceptable-relationship/#comments The next time someone gives me a shit-eating grin and says any of the following, I will lose my mind: “It’s different when they’re yours!” “You will change your mind someday!” “Everyone thinks that when they’re young!” “Of course you [...]

  • I was similarly annoyed at my first visit to a doctor’s office about a week ago. “Single, married?” “…….uh. Partnered. Not married but partnered, yeah.” (I co-opt the word “housewife” mostly because I don’t have a full-time job and thus pull my weight by doing most of the domestic tasks and managing home-things, I get [...]

I suppose it is possible that they figured “Let’s piss everyone off for brand awareness!” I don’t think it was their intent though. They don’t have a good track record with advertising (how could they?) and, as much as I say I can’t believe someone let this campaign happen, I do see how they figured [...]

Damn! The nerd inside me is crushed. My sophomore year of college, I did a lecture about some of DC’s women and Carrie Kelley was by far the most interesting and positive of the bunch. I strongly believe that Batman’s right-hand women are a particularly badass and special kind of superwomen, and it’s shitty to [...]

ThumbnailSummer’s Eve and their advertising company just do not get it. Please take a look at this relevant graph: Once again, in case you missed it , you fucked up. You fucked up by making an ad that is both racist and sexist and by branding it as empowerment. “What do you mean sexist? Racist, too?! I have black friends! [...]

  • Today? This week? In recent memory? This is not an easy question. Well there was the time I explained to a room full of a hundred people how to safely stretch the anus for a vigorous fuckin’ (among other unladylike things), or the time I planned and executed an event called “Condom Casino” for 400 [...]

ThumbnailI feel like a stranger on planet earth with all the Harry Potter talk that has been going on. I also grew up with the series as a cultural cornerstone, but I stopped reading the books after #4, and I have never seen any of the films. I admit to being a little jealous, seeing all [...]

  • Third Wave Housewife wrote a new blog post: Rage against the (douche) machine   3 years, 3 months ago · View

Let’s talk about the word “douche.” French for “shower,” in English, the noun form refers to a medical irrigation device; colloquially, an irrigation device for the vagina. Also a verb, “to douche” to use said device to irrigate the vaginal canal or other cavity. Then, there is the slang use: referring to a person as [...]

Thanks so much! And her commentary on motherhood is EXACTLY what I forgot to address in here (slapped myself on the forehead for missing that all of 30 seconds after I hit “submit”). Looking back, a lot of what she said about motherhood is completely appalling. As if women calculate their moves as parents in [...]
