Thank you for this check-in. I think it’s something we forget to do with each other on a daily basis and even after a tragedy. The more time that passes, the less attention I see paid to Newtown. I grew up in Newtown for the first 15 out of my 24 years. Now that I [...]

Very interesting. What about other situations like egg donors?

How ironic that this post is right near my SlutWalk Houston one. This situation played a major factor into many people’s desire to have a SlutWalk in Houston. Our hearts are with this young girl and we march for her.

After watching SlutWalk spread like wildfire across Canada and the US, Houston activists decided to get in on the fun! Brought to you by the Women’s Studies Student Association and UNITY at University of Houston-Clear Lake, Student Feminist Organization at University of Houston-Downtown, Betch H-Town ,  and lots of other amazing organizers! SlutWalk Houston will take place July 9 at 11 AM. Routes and [...]

Cross-listed at theFword While most blog posts about this event are already up, I feel it necessary to write my own post to untangle my mixed reactions to this event. Let me preface this by saying: I completely understand (and hope) that this provides a sense of closure to my friends who lost loved ones on 9/11. I [...]

  • Morgan commented on the blog post To Veil or Not to Veil: Veiling Made Illegal in France   3 years, 3 months ago · View

Right–women can be arrested if they refuse to take off the veil but the police cannot remove it themselves (at least it’s clear that that would be harassment).

  • Morgan wrote a new blog post: To Veil or Not to Veil: Veiling Made Illegal in France   3 years, 3 months ago · View

This post is crosslisted at theFword France’s ban against veiling began today, which makes it illegal for women to wear burqas or niqabs (full face veils) in any public space. A woman who repeatedly insists on veiling can be charged over $200 and will be required to take “re-education classes” (whatever that means). Police arrested 19 veiled women on Saturday [...]

Yes, I actually am emailing back and forth with Megan about posting this post on SAFER’s blog! I’m very interested in doing work as an alumna to make campuses safer for reporting incidents of sexual assault.

  • Morgan wrote a new blog post: Take Back the Campus: An Alumna’s Perspective   3 years, 3 months ago · View

This past weekend I returned to my Alma mater, filled with excitement and nostalgia, to present a workshop on dichotomized sexuality. After the exhilarating experience of educating fellow youth, I attended another workshop on masculinity. The adrenaline high from my own workshop wore off as current students began to express frustration over lack of action [...]

  • Morgan commented on the blog post Shame on Me?   3 years, 4 months ago · View

The expectations and circumstances within an affair are different. People who love each other but can’t be together, as in your case and the case of long distance relationships, have the tricky line to straddle of being emotionally involved with each other but maybe being sexually involved with other people. I guess my point was [...]

From http://thefword527.tumblr.com/post/4028476461/shame-on-me The personal is political. This is sorta feminism and activism 101. But I hate the feeling when I’m reminded of this in my own life. Too often, I am in situations when I visit family in which I feel misunderstood or dismissed because of my “radical” views. (Sidenote: when did wanting equality become radical?). Even more so, I [...]

As a feminist who loves hip hop, I was intrigued to see Love & Hip Hop on VH1 . I am overwhelmed 10 minutes in. To see Fabolous’ girlfriend in tears because he has kept her a secret for 8 years is the behind-the-scenes look at the hip hop industry that the listeners don’t usually see. I think about [...]

IWD and Feminist Coming Out Day were kind of like Christmas to me. The buildup was filled with excitement and anticipation. And just like the day after Christmas or your birthday, I felt the sadness that the day had passed and wondered if we would remember in a week all the important sentiments the day signifies. [...]

  • Morgan commented on the blog post The Most Important Role? Motherhood, Marriage, and Feminism   3 years, 4 months ago · View

I think we devalue anything that’s considered “women’s work” (e.g., nursing, childcare, teaching). I agree that parenthood is a large responsibility and a decision (notice my pro-chouce sentiments here!) that should not be made lightly. I guess my issue with all of this is that motherhood is (societally) expected to be a woman’s most important [...]

Wow, thank you for the great comments! I think it’s an interesting to think about what the reaction would be if Colin Firth had said thank you to his partner for giving him his most important role. I think people would be thrilled and commend his exceptional parenting because men are often hyper-rewarded for being [...]
