A few months ago, I had someone accuse me of stalking. We were both students at a small school; we lived in the same dorm. We had been part of the same circle of friends. He had the campus police order me to not contact him and had the actual police call and threaten to arrest [...]

This. So much. Guess when I got compliments? Not when I was lifting weights and running and happy with my body. Not when I could lift and move stuff and had semi-visible muscles. No, it was when I lost weight. Mind, I started at 100 pounds and had dropped to 90.

For that matter, if they wanted an event that was about male/female interaction, it’s not hard to create one. A lot of single-gender schools have a partner school; just create a mixed event. Even if there’s no partner school, just create a social event that’s not so focused on dating.

  • sunset commented on the blog post Why ending DADT must wait   3 years, 8 months ago · View

I don’t think any of that will change until DADT ends. As long as the military is still not allowing gays openly, they won’t develop training or services for them. Ending DADT is the only way to get the ball rolling to get the things you’re looking for implemented, because with it still in place [...]

Nice idea, but I wish they had avoided the word “sanity.” Are those of us who aren’t “sane” (i.e. have a mental illness) welcome?

Are you familiar with the term “kyriarchy”? That’s the overall term for what you’re talking about – a system where differences based on unearned and uncontrollable factors are used to decide people’s worth. I take myself to be interested in all these factors that contribute to this system. I just don’t have the time or [...]

Isn’t the whole point of feminism that “some groups do better than others”? Specifically, that some groups do better than others because certain groups possess unearned privilege. Yes, body image falls into that category. The “ideal” body image in our society is something very few can possess. Normal, healthy women’s bodies are stereotyped as lazy [...]

Thin privilege sort of exists in this weird space.  Because it’s so tied up in the cultural definition of femininity.  Not that men can’t have thin privilege…but it’s not nearly the same.  It always seemed to me to be a sort of backhanded privilege, a reward for staying in your place and not trying to [...]

  • sunset commented on the blog post Let’s tell kids that rape = a pick-up strategy?   3 years, 11 months ago · View

Nationality based comments are probably not the most helpful here. While Polanski is obviously several words I’m not going to say, I doubt polish men are much more likely to rape than any other group of men raised in western society.

Nice to see I’m not the only one who loved that part of the strip. I also rather liked that it’s a sort of flip of the “exotic native woman” – the yuan-ti is actually an intelligent actor with her own agency rather than something decorative. In all seriousness, we should compile a list of [...]

  • sunset commented on the blog post The Trouble With “Females”   3 years, 11 months ago · View

My general guideline here is to try the term “kid.” If you feel like kid would be inappropriate, don’t use “girl.” Or if you would refer to a man in the same position as a “boy.” As a side note, I consider “gal” to be the proper correlate term to “guy,” for informal usage.

That was to be honest why my abusive relationship lasted so long. Because I felt that leaving after sexual activity would make me a dirty unlovable slut. Nevermind that he’d forced me into the acts…of course I must have tempted him into doing that.

I’d be curious how many of these people who say “you could have walked away” then complain about women not keeping their relationship commitments.

  • sunset commented on the blog post Elizabeth Hasselback thinks lesbians are just man-deprived   4 years ago · View

Hey look, these ladies are so desperate for some loving they’ll take anyone at all! Even another lady! Because of course women can’t just be single! Or not have wanted to marry young! And we all know a woman will do anything to get a man, even if her man is another woman!

Heh. I always wonder about the “real woman” stuff. What exactly does that mean for the gender-variant among us? Not just trans*, but those that don’t fall within the normal male/female binary at all? Can I be a “real androgyne”? Please?

  • sunset commented on the blog post Ageism is a Feminist Issue   4 years ago · View

Interesting…as a young feminist, I often feel unwelcome in feminist communities because I don’t have the long track record of an older feminist. I wonder if this is yet another way that patriarchy gets us coming and going. Young women are flighty, old women are bitter. Young women are shallow, old women are ugly. And [...]

Research like this has a tendency to fall to the “correlation=causation” fallacy. There may be a correlation in his sample between being male and being more distracted. That doesn’t mean “men have to look at pretty faces.” It could just as well mean “Men in our society are more socialized to look at what are [...]

  • sunset commented on the blog post Yes! Yes! I’m a Lesbian! Will you stop bugging me?   4 years ago · View

I wonder if this is a sort of…”exaggeration” of what happens to most women. Our society in general seems to have issues with the single woman. And as a (presumed) straight female, I do constantly get questions of “do you think he’s cute? what about that guy?” Lesbianism, of course, as a factor in exaggerating [...]
