Cross-posted from Speaker’s Corner ________________________ TW for sexual assault and cover-up. You can file this under: why women don’t report sexual assaults. When you see things like this, you think, “what’s the fucking point?” When the police view your sexual assault as an inconvenience because it will mess up their crime statistics instead a problem that needs to be [...]

Thanks for highlighting these people today. I also wrote on this last week and included some additional TX state representatives who publicly stood up for women last week. In the midst of this very scary battle over women’s bodily autonomy, it’s nice to know that there are elected officials in my state willing to stand against [...]

Cross-posted at Speaker’s Corner . ______________________ On Tuesday, CBS News reported that their reporter, Lara Logan , had been brutally sexually assaulted and beaten in Tahrir square in Cairo in the immediate aftermath of the announcement that President Mubarak had stepped down. There were a lot of responses that floated across the interwebs and throughout the media that were deplorable [...] -

Cross-posted at Speaker’s Corner This weekend, on the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade , the conservative website RedState took up the argument that the enslaved in antebellum America are equivalent to fetuses in the womb:
Twice in our nation’s history, arrogant and power-mad Supreme Court Justices have declared that certain humans are exempt from the promise of the Declaration [...]

Crossposted at Speaker’s Corner . Let’s count how many total nominations there were for Writers Guild of America’s annual awards. And then we’ll count how many are women! Should be fun and instructive, right? The full list of nominees is over at Speaker’s Corner with the nominated women identified by their red names. Here’s the breakdown: There are [...]

Or something like that. According to Belmont (which is in Nashville), the coach resigned when her same-sex relationship came to light. Of course, as this article says , she was first dismissed by the university after disclosing to her players that she and her partner were expecting a child. And Belmont really, really, really wants you to [...]

I understand what you are saying and agree that we need to address the bullying itself. I’m not trying to argue with you on that point or take away from that. I do want to say that I think the title of the campaign works well because the campaign is not directed at the people [...]

The problem with reporting it to MSNBC is that it is an AP article. You can find it all over the internet on lots of different new websites because of it. I have never tried to complain to the AP – I will look into it.
And I completely agree with everything you said.

It was really ONLY about litigation then, according to the article, there would be more appropriate people to target than late-stage pregnant women. “Much more common are passenger medical emergencies like heart attacks and anxiety attacks, or travelers who pass out after taking tranquilizers or drinking alcohol.” People would have to present papers about their [...]

Crossposted at Speaker’s Corner . From the AP (via MSNBC): Pregnant Fliers Can Easily Hide Condition from Airline This is literally the first line of the article:
If a woman really wants to get around the rules barring her from flying in late pregnancy, there’s little an airline can do to stop her.
OH NO! While I get that [...]

Cross-posted at Speaker’s Corner . Last week the New York Times reported that Ben Roethlisberger has returned to work. Remember the last time we heard from him? Yeah, it was a pleasant affair. From April 2010:
Within the last two years, there were first the allegations of sexual assault asserted in a civil lawsuit by a Reno, Nevada woman; then more [...]

Fine. You’re right. Me caring about the women of Afghanistan is equal to me not caring about US soldiers. I’m being ridiculous and should keep my pro-women’s-rights’ concerns to myself. You win. I’m glad that you have chosen to direct your anger about this war at me and my concern for other human beings (but [...]

I’m not ignoring the fact that we are sacrificing lives. I’m keenly aware of it. So, no, to answer your ridiculous and bating question, I don’t think ANY lives are expendable. Ever. Sheesh. You’ve set a false dichotomy between my concern for Afghani women and the lives of US soldiers. My concern for one doesn’t [...]

This week’s TIME magazine has a shocking picture on the cover. An important picture. I am glad they chose to put it there.
