    Louisa,

Who is the victim? And will the ‘victim’ agree that he or she is one?

Brava! “There’s an argument around that this development has been pushed from men idolizing porn stars (which in turn stems from our repressive society). But it takes two to tango. Do we really think that in order to attract a man we have to shave our pubes?” I made exactly the same point in a [...]

  • A long argument! I cannot disagree with the parts that mention ‘consent can be withdrawn at any time’, or that ‘having sex’ with someone who is comatose is rape. What I shall quibble about is that the law already says that. The fact that some guys believe that abusing a woman who is out cold [...]

  • Suasn, Is anal bleaching bleaching still doing the rounds? It first featured in my 2003 Christmas card (honest). Anyway. I don’t like fake breasts (I find them unnatural). But that is neither here or there. What has always surprised me is that women seem to think that fake – which usually means bigger – breasts [...]

  • Maya, A few questions. At what age do Californians start College? I ask because we Europeans are sometimes unclear about American terms. Are they over 18? If yes, then this news is staggering. It means that there are now two categories of adults in California: those in college and those outside. The law seems to [...]

Richard, Why is it obvious that he is lying? He sounds like an arrogant b******, sure. But that not make him a liar. Has anyone backed up her story? It doesn’t help his case that he admits to similar prior behaviour, I’ll grant you that, but I’m a little reticent to condemn someone – anyone [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post “We have to stop categorizing abortions as justified or unjustified.”   1 month, 2 weeks ago · View

Good point. Over here, for example in the UK, an abortion is allowed if the continued pregnancy may cause distress or mental health problems to the mother(-to-be). In effect, it means that an abortion can be obtained on demand. It may not be what the law intended, but that how things are. So, I have [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Chart of the Day: The pay gap narrows by one whole percentage point   1 month, 2 weeks ago · View

Oh, statistics! An endless source of seemingly contradictory results. And yet.

    For example, between 1960 and 2013, women’s earnings increased 75%. And men’s? A mere 35%

And since 1974, men’s earnings have declined by 4%, while women’s have increased a massive 30%

    All true!

Or when she kicked him in the goolies!

Uma, Well written piece, and quite punchy. The fact that feministing seems to have become corporate should hardly surprise anyone here. Feministing.com spends a lot of time in fields corporate. Glass ceiling. Equal pay. The number of female programmers at Google. Health insurance/birth control provided by companies. And so on. It is hardly surprising that [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Crowdfunding for all? How WePay discriminates against sex workers   4 months, 3 weeks ago · View

I do not know the site. I presume it is private.

As such I believe it should have the right to restrict the kind of products or services it provides.

Feministing.com would probably refuse an advert or promotion for the Republican party, right?

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Yes, your friend may be a rapist   5 months ago · View

Jacqueline, No, there is no nuance you missed. However, however, you are reading too much in a little comment. The original post says, quite simply, that one can never be certain that a man may not turn out to be a rapist. I don’t contest that, because – strictly speaking – it is true. But, [...]

Would you also say that every woman is capable of making false accusations of rape?

    You don’t know, do you?

Sunday. As expected, it was rejected, by 75% of voters.

  • Smiley commented on the blog post My American Dream: A minimum wage that allows everyone to prosper   5 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Interesting vote in Switzerland this weekend. The proposal is a minimum monthly wage of 4 000.- Swiss francs. That’s 4 500 US dollars.

The polls are suggesting the proposal will be rejected.

I don’t know what to think.

The comments are the things that struck me. ‘Sold like an NFL player. It is outrageous.’ So, the father finds it outrageous does he? And when was he upset about the NFL draft system? Selling players? And they are obliged to play for the highest bidder. Doesn’t he find that outrageous? Until he does I’ll [...]

    Maya,

… And what should the organizers have done?

The speakers seem to represent heavyweights in the industry. Until one of the heavy hitters is led by a woman, it is not surprising if all the speakers are men.

    Wrong target I’m afraid.

  • Maya, “Since I agree it’s a losing strategy {…} here’s hoping the SBA List throws their support and considerable financial heft behind the most outspoken, rabid anti-choicer out there.” And if they follow your advice and, despite the polls, wins, what do you do then? Second question for you: if the GOP did revise its [...]

Mike, Bravo! Exactly my feelings too. I’ve never understood this concept of ‘appropriation’. From what I read here it seems that it is wrong for someone of white skin to belly dance, or for a white guy to rap. I’m pretty sure only Blacks are allowed to play jazz, too. But if someone complained that [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Britain posthumously pardons scientist it chemically castrated   10 months, 1 week ago · View

John, Good point. I’d add that he was convicted because he broke the law of the time. A pardon for an innocent man is different from a pardon for an offence that no longer exists. Furthermore, I find it a little odd that of the thousands of men convicted, only he gets a pardon. Why? [...]
