Uma, Well written piece, and quite punchy. The fact that feministing seems to have become corporate should hardly surprise anyone here. Feministing.com spends a lot of time in fields corporate. Glass ceiling. Equal pay. The number of female programmers at Google. Health insurance/birth control provided by companies. And so on. It is hardly surprising that [...]

I do not know the site. I presume it is private.

As such I believe it should have the right to restrict the kind of products or services it provides.

Feministing.com would probably refuse an advert or promotion for the Republican party, right?

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Yes, your friend may be a rapist   2 months ago · View

Jacqueline, No, there is no nuance you missed. However, however, you are reading too much in a little comment. The original post says, quite simply, that one can never be certain that a man may not turn out to be a rapist. I don’t contest that, because – strictly speaking – it is true. But, [...]

Would you also say that every woman is capable of making false accusations of rape?

    You don’t know, do you?

Sunday. As expected, it was rejected, by 75% of voters.

Interesting vote in Switzerland this weekend. The proposal is a minimum monthly wage of 4 000.- Swiss francs. That’s 4 500 US dollars.

The polls are suggesting the proposal will be rejected.

I don’t know what to think.

The comments are the things that struck me. ‘Sold like an NFL player. It is outrageous.’ So, the father finds it outrageous does he? And when was he upset about the NFL draft system? Selling players? And they are obliged to play for the highest bidder. Doesn’t he find that outrageous? Until he does I’ll [...]

    Maya,

… And what should the organizers have done?

The speakers seem to represent heavyweights in the industry. Until one of the heavy hitters is led by a woman, it is not surprising if all the speakers are men.

    Wrong target I’m afraid.

  • Maya, “Since I agree it’s a losing strategy {…} here’s hoping the SBA List throws their support and considerable financial heft behind the most outspoken, rabid anti-choicer out there.” And if they follow your advice and, despite the polls, wins, what do you do then? Second question for you: if the GOP did revise its [...]

Mike, Bravo! Exactly my feelings too. I’ve never understood this concept of ‘appropriation’. From what I read here it seems that it is wrong for someone of white skin to belly dance, or for a white guy to rap. I’m pretty sure only Blacks are allowed to play jazz, too. But if someone complained that [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Britain posthumously pardons scientist it chemically castrated   7 months ago · View

John, Good point. I’d add that he was convicted because he broke the law of the time. A pardon for an innocent man is different from a pardon for an offence that no longer exists. Furthermore, I find it a little odd that of the thousands of men convicted, only he gets a pardon. Why? [...]

Online dating. Jenny Davis, the author, does not mention a couple of confounding factors. The first one is wealth: it is quite conceivable that White men are associated with wealth – in other words, they are likelier to have more money than others. Women who want to meet them might very well not be rejecting [...]

  • I am a little at a loss here: i do not watch the series. However, i am a little perturbed. One, it is only a story. And two, who says that an actress is a representative for her sex and her racial group? Did she volunteer for those roles? As far as i can tell, [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post But the man who molested me was white   1 year ago · View

Alicia, Thanks for the reply. A few points. First, I’d have made the point even if you’d said ‘typical Mexican fashion’, ‘typical gay man’, ‘typical lesbian behaviour’, and so on, even though I don’t qualify under any of those chapters. The point is that Feministing is very sensitive to what is called essentializing. Borne of [...]

    ” In typical white-person fashion, ”

Can you please explain how you can defend such an dreadful case of essentializing.

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Can you figure out what this police x-ray captured?   1 year ago · View

Katie, I agree with Alex’s comment. And I think your reply is stretching things a little. I suspect most (all?) the people caught in the truck paid, voluntarily for the trip. True, their conditions at home are probably desperate. True, the ‘transport provider’ is making money from their plight. But someone who agrees voluntarily to [...]

    Franzia,

You know what? I agree with you!

I wish the women around me had heard your call when I was at University!

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Let’s talk about ‘rush boobs’   1 year ago · View

Franzia, The point about tattoos and the military is this: if a woman is deemed responsible enough about marking her body for life and is considered intelligent enough to join the military, then she ought to be allowed to do what she likes with her tits. We don’t want anyone else deciding what she does [...]

  • Smiley commented on the blog post Let’s talk about ‘rush boobs’   1 year ago · View

    Danielle,

So, in a nutshell. Women want an abortion: Feministing says Bravo! Women want a tattoo? Go for it, Sister. Women want to join the military, and kill innocent women and children (in all likelihood)? Yes, that’s progress.

Women want to show their boobs. Oh no, that’s not good.

    Am I missing something here?

ELot, You are being a little unfair. I don’t know who or what GoDaddy and Texxxan are. Since I didn’t make any comment about those cases, you are presuming I’d have sided against the (women?) complainants. You have no reason to believe that. For the record, I’d have made the same comment had the roles [...]
