In two minds about Rihanna’s new tattoo.

  • The State definitions of mental illness as opposed to culpability are a bit narrow and weird. This isn’t the first time people have been declared sane after committing the kind of crimes that no sane or normal person would want to commit. Personally I think he was mad as a march hare, and the whole [...]

This is cool. I think Western feminists need to pay a lot more attention to what is happening in grassroots elsewhere, esp parts of Africa. It’s great that so many girls are so dynamic, and heartwarming to see it.

Well said. Negating a young woman’s experience and cultural expression on the grounds that it “plays out” differently in the USA is disturbing, and the original piece implied that Lorde’s feminism must be “racist” and she had to learn from (presumably American) “activists” in order to become a good feminist. I think that the issue raises an important, troubling point: while a [...]

Well said. Not that I’m equating the two, but it’s worth remembering that it was established at Nuremburg trials that if a law is manifestly wrong and harmful then it is the duty of citizens to break it and to refuse to obey orders that tell them to do harm. Capturing a flag, in this [...]

Point three is really well made – thanks – it’s a good remedy for a couple of people in my life who tell me I’m just “obsessing about celebrities” (i.e trivia) if I try to talk about this issue.
