I don’t have much to add to further this discussion but I just wanted to say “YES!” to everything in this article. You really put into words what I’ve been feeling as I listen to discussions around the “culpability” of victims of oppression.

    Thanks.

I can’t believe that I’m quoting Russell Brand on this but, from his Guardian article on Thatcher’s death and legacy:

Barack Obama, interestingly, said in his statement that she had “broken the glass ceiling for other women”. Only in the sense that all the women beneath her were blinded by falling shards. She is an icon [...]

Thank you. Unionize. That’s how you get power in the workplace.

Slut-shaming is wrong no matter who is doing it or why they are doing it. Pretending that your omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent and omnibenevolent sky-fairy told you to slut-shame is incrementally worse though. All-perfect beings are never wrong so there’s no questioning God’s slut-shaming. At least secular slut-shaming admits that it’s just coming from our own [...]

Actually, many countries manage to swing paying parents to stay home, atleast for some time, to raise small children. Typically, the benefits are paid through an employment insurance scheme or a social welfare fund.

Social programs that support families. They exist, just not in the United States.

I’m so excited to announce that my hometown, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada is holding its first annual Pride Week from June 5 – 12. I wish it was the twentieth annual rather than the first but I’m glad that it’s finally happening here.

I have to admit that I’m surprised by your professor’s attitude towards parents who opt to stay home to raise children. Granted, this has historically been a ghetto into which women have been forced against their will but her attitude towards ‘traditional’ work seems dated, even to me (and it’s been 20 yrs since I [...]

I signed in to post the same comment. It’s a national disgrace for Canadians. Even more disturbing is the rate of incarceration for Aboriginal women, many of whom end up in prison as a result of their own victimization.

I am a major pinko, socialist, pro-legalized pot, pro-gay marriage, feminist labour historian but I’m not an ass-fucked slut, just a regular slut. Do I get to join the club too or is ass-fuckery a requirement for admission. I have taken some sociology classes, if that helps.

Actually, by using his employer’s computer and email address, he crossed the line, particularly given that he sent out an email with hateful, racist language with his employer’s computer and email address. They need to know what their employee is doing – for all appearances in their name – before he emails a racist screed [...]

Is there a United Way chapter in your home town? Maybe you should start one? This is the link to the Canadian site but I’m pretty sure they’re in the US as well.

For the last few years, at Christmas time, I have opted to adopt a local family on social assistance. The process is simple; local family and children’s aid agencies give you a profile of a family and a wish list for Christmas. You buy toys, winter coats, mitts, etc. for the children and something special [...]

  • Regarding (C), this is obviously an attempt to argue against gay marriage on secular grounds so that the argument cannot be made that the government is allowing religious doctrine to affect government actions. It is, ofcourse, grossly flawed and still religious in nature. The argument that marriage is for the procreation of children is actually [...]

I’m not going to continue the Bible study but, suffice it to say, there are ample contradictions in the Old and New Testaments on this and other issues. If they were God’s attempt to explain how we should live and what he expects from us, then they are a very bad attempt. You can see [...]

This isn’t the first time that the USian media has ‘discovered’ an issue after Palin starts talking about it.

I don’t know if you noticed, but there was no sexism in the coverage of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. According to the media, sexism in the coverage didn’t become an issue until Sarah Palin ran for VP.

Oh, I’ll respond to that. I was referring to the OP’s comment that ‘we’ (I assume she means feminists) can’t let fundamentalists define religion. I’m fine with that but, as an atheist, it’s not my job to change the public face of Christianity or Islam or Judaism (if we can stick to the Abrahamic “Big [...]

  • SamBarge commented on the blog post Is changing your name when you get married ever a feminist move?   3 years, 11 months ago · View

I’ve used my spouse’s last name ever since we got married 20 yrs ago. It wasn’t a pre-feminist decision but rather a case of expediency. My parents are Italian immigrants and my birth name (which is still my legal name, by the way) was long and difficult for English speakers to pronounce. Before I got [...]
