Sam L-L commented on the blog post Brilliant teen creates device that charges cell in 30 seconds! 15 hours, 30 minutes ago · View
Here’s her actual project summary . It sounds like the energy density is still about 4 times most capacitors currently in use, but still about a factor of 10 below lithium-ion batteries (which are mostly what we are actually currently using in our phones). It looks like people are currently more enthusiastic about the upcoming generation of [...]

Winning the Intel science fair is usually a good sign of a first class technical or scientific intellect, so I’m confident that Ms. Khare would like it if people got the details correct, unlike basically every pop science article written about her that I can find: She did not “invent a fast-charging device called a [...]

Yeah, I can. But if you’re really invested in feminism as much as you say you are then you shouldn’t want me to.
Great answer!

It looks to me like a very standard “highlight a subgroup that’s underrepresented” event. It’s not like they’re pushing stereotypes about masculinity – if anything it looks like quite the opposite. Your point is well-made that focusing on the role of men in the movement emphasizes and relies upon a discrete gender binary – but [...]

In my personal experience, “who built the patriarchy” is a wildly unproductive line of intellectual inquiry. I think it’s more fruitful for us to focus on how to disassemble it.

I’m confused; Mr. Smith explicitly and repeatedly wrote that there are multiple causes behind street harassment and never advanced the claim that there is only one causal factor at work here. Furthermore, I don’t think he is making any claims here at all about “who decide what masculinity is”. I think maybe you are arguing [...]

We have to demand that new legislation should be targeted to be effective, though. Out of the total number of gun killings each year, what fraction would be reduced – either halted or even just made more unlikely – by these new proposed laws? My understanding is that the overwhelming majority of gun killings in [...]

Sam L-L commented on the blog post Student perspective: Catholic universities must embrace discussion on sex and reproductive health 1 month, 1 week ago · View
Naturally, I agree with your perspective completely. However, wouldn’t the Catholic Church say that the current situation (shame and stigma definitely included) is working 100% as intended? Why isn’t the right answer to get students and learning institutions out from under the control of the religious hierarchy?

Sam L-L commented on the blog post Quick Hit: California bans insurance discrimination against trans* patients 1 month, 1 week ago · View
That’s great news. I know that often, in regulatory areas, California leads and the rest of the nation follows – hopefully as Obamacare phases in, increased homogenization of national health insurance standards will lead to further states following California’s lead in this regard.

Sam L-L commented on the blog post Skewed priorities mean Smith is not currently fulfilling its mission as a women’s college 1 month, 1 week ago · View
If the mission of Smith College centers around the need for sex segregation, won’t that always be at the expense of those people who don’t fit cleanly into the current mainstream view of a perfectly discrete gender binary? I thought we were all in agreement here that such a view of gender is a “lies-to-children” [...]

Also, here are some Thatcher quotes I found that were maybe worth including in your article, to give a better idea of what kind of person we’re talking about here: “The battle for women’s rights has largely been won. The days when they were demanded and discussed in strident tones should be gone forever. I [...]

Last time we talked about Ms. Rich one of our commentors, Marlene, brought up: ”

I am not a neuroscientist but have a scientific background and I’m always happy to hear from the professionals. The last thing I read about this topic was Cordelia Fine’s Delusions of Gender which argued (to me fairly convincingly) that “hard-wired” differences by sex are relatively small and usually over-exaggerated. I remember the book as a [...]
