When talking about the gendered wage gap, why do we always phrase it as “women are paid less than men” rather than “men are paid more than women?”

Because proposing to raise people’s wages sounds good and proposing to cut people’s wages sounds villainous.

    Is this a trick question?

I don’t really contribute to Wikipedia any more because it seems like some large fraction of new articles get deleted for “notability” which as far as I can tell means any one user with more hours sunk into the site than you isn’t interested in your topic. Hopefully that doesn’t end up sinking this effort, [...]

I agree completely, except that I think the rules of not stealing other people’s property and treating them as you would want to be treated – generally good principles – can sensibly have an exception for when one is dealing with actual Nazis.

If, like me, you were wondering how a school could ban a song from its campus, or what that would even mean: Reading the linked article closely, and ignoring both headlines, one can glean that what actually happened is that the student association at the school banned the song from events held at its own [...]

There’s got to be a good blue pill / red pill joke in here somewhere.

I’m not so sure about that last one – my wife and I more or less stopped watching Glee after Finn was very physically abusive to another character, Brody, because a) Brody was dating Finn’s ex-girlfriend, whom Finn scarily possessively referred to as “my future wife” and b) because Brody was a sex worker. We [...]

I think the first article gets the intersectionality all backwards – men, particularly black men, are victims of violence more often than women; their deaths are prosecuted at a lower rate, and the conviction rates are lower when they are the victims in murder cases. These are all pretty well established statistical facts (citations on [...]

The most promising upcoming contender, Vasalgel, is non-hormonal (it’s a polymer gel injected into the vas deferens), but yes, absolutely. It’s worth noting that, as caracolita remarks below, if a man or couple is completely sure they do not want any children, a vasectomy is by far the best current solution.

Here’s her actual project summary . It sounds like the energy density is still about 4 times most capacitors currently in use, but still about a factor of 10 below lithium-ion batteries (which are mostly what we are actually currently using in our phones). It looks like people are currently more enthusiastic about the upcoming generation of [...]

Winning the Intel science fair is usually a good sign of a first class technical or scientific intellect, so I’m confident that Ms. Khare would like it if people got the details correct, unlike basically every pop science article written about her that I can find: She did not “invent a fast-charging device called a [...]

Yeah, I can. But if you’re really invested in feminism as much as you say you are then you shouldn’t want me to.

    Great answer!

It looks to me like a very standard “highlight a subgroup that’s underrepresented” event. It’s not like they’re pushing stereotypes about masculinity – if anything it looks like quite the opposite. Your point is well-made that focusing on the role of men in the movement emphasizes and relies upon a discrete gender binary – but [...]

In my personal experience, “who built the patriarchy” is a wildly unproductive line of intellectual inquiry. I think it’s more fruitful for us to focus on how to disassemble it.

I’m confused; Mr. Smith explicitly and repeatedly wrote that there are multiple causes behind street harassment and never advanced the claim that there is only one causal factor at work here. Furthermore, I don’t think he is making any claims here at all about “who decide what masculinity is”. I think maybe you are arguing [...]

We have to demand that new legislation should be targeted to be effective, though. Out of the total number of gun killings each year, what fraction would be reduced – either halted or even just made more unlikely – by these new proposed laws? My understanding is that the overwhelming majority of gun killings in [...]
