  • You can argue that the name of the meme comes from the name of the song. But the reason people are doing that weird dance, as opposed to anything else, is because they think they are doing the Harlem Shake.

yeah. i was really disappointed with a lot of feminist response to the quvenzhané wallis tweet, including the one from maryann johanson that was posted here yesterday. she got so caught up in how the onion was really making feminist commentary that it was like she had forgotten that this is about a little girl. [...]

  • No, he does it essentially every time he talks about women. “Our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts.” (inauguration) I find it really jarring to listen to, as though suddenly the speech is directed at someone else. And it is bizarre to [...]

You guys, the Daily Currant is satire. “TSA spokesperson Dirk Diggler”?

Sandy Hook is an elementary school. Adam Lanza was an adult man and 17 when his parents divorced. I realize those are minor points but I can’t even stand to address the rest of this BS.

Come on, are the Gardasil ads really “contradictory messaging”? “Girls” and “women” are two different groups of people after all. The vaccine is recommended for 12 to 26 year olds. Of course you need two different ad campaigns–one for parents, who are responsible for the health care of their young children, and one for teenagers/young [...]

  • Sadly I think if the diagnosis is removed altogether, then the already limited insurance coverage for transition-related care will become outright nonexistent. I can only see two ways out: 1) this care becomes classified as preventive care that does not require an existing diagnosis, like contraception or cancer screening or 2) we have a real overhaul [...]

Yes, these were my thoughts exactly. This sounds like D/s to me, and for all we know his wife is as much into it as he is. Frankly, it really does seem to me like gossip and not politically relevant.

  • rhian commented on the blog post Quick Hit: Why don’t more American women use IUDs?   8 months ago · View

There are a some misconceptions on this thread that I wanted to address: 1. The old IUDs (Dalkon Shield) did have a lot of problems and scared a lot of people away from IUDs. But those problems are drastically reduced with today’s IUDs, which are very safe and very effective. Not to say, of course, that [...]

    She did censor it, anyway.

  • rhian commented on the blog post White births have been outnumbered by non-white – now what?   1 year ago · View

I don’t really think this means anything. White people are still the largest and most powerful group and will be for a while even after they become a “minority”. It’s also worth noting that “white” is also a category that historically grows to incorporate “other” groups as they gain power (Jews, Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, etc.). POCs, [...]

  • I think it’s great that he “personally” thinks that same-sex couples should be allowed to get married. It’s an important public statement by the leader of our country. And yes, it’s a step. But… I am really not that impressed by this. This is not a “decision” and it’s really not “change.” He said in [...]

I don’t know about that homophobia article. For one thing, their methodology seems to leave their conclusions open to a lot of alternative interpretations. For another, I think that the whole “haha, homophobes are closet gays” argument is itself homophobic.

Yes! Exactly. This is very perceptive.

  • I haven’t read this book, but I’m not willing to tolerate the use of the word “phenomena” in place of “phenomenon”, particularly in Newsweek…

Just wanted to point out that gestational age is always defined by the first day of last menstrual period. So yes, in terms of biology, you’re more like 18 weeks pregnant. But if you went to an obstetrician, they would say you are 20 weeks pregnant. It’s nothing specific to this bill.

You know, I have been wondering this too, and I live here. My understanding was that “self defense” is usually an argument made in court, i.e. after you have been arrested and tried for something. I’ve never heard of it being used as a reason that an arrest is not made. Maybe if it were [...]

I’m not sure what kind of research and study you have done. I’m a scientist–a biologist with an evolutionary bent. A lot of research that has been done into what you call the “homosapienfemale behaviour pattern” is really not very good science. Much of it is in fact very sexist, using pseudoscientific handwavey explanations to [...]

    Hey Dave,
I agree with what Sam and honeybee said above. What you describe is not what most self-identified feminists believe. But I’m curious–what happened to change your mind about feminism? How would you describe your perspective now?
