It is unfortunate that you are getting the message that women are not good in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Looking at the success of women in the STEM fields at colleges and universities should be encouraging. The National Science Foundation (NSF) reports (www.nsf.gov) that in 2010 women were awarded: – 57.2% [...]

I think the commercial is stupid. But what makes a product targeted at one gender sexist? And when is that sexism important enough that we should protest? . – O.K. we’ve got ‘Dr. Pepper Ten is declared a “man’s drink”’. Sexist? Yes. – What about the Chicago book store featured on this blog last year, [...]

What in the photo suggests that the woman’s injury was due to domestic violence?

Could she be an athlete having gone to the salon after a rough game in order to get ready for a night on the town?

  • Thanks for the reply. I would sure like to hear from others too. I think heart disease does have some of the same characteristics you mention. High blood pressure, a key early symptom, can be diagnosed and treated with some relative ease. It does tend to impact older women, though. The key question, I guess, [...]

  • Very good article. I am curious why there is so much emphasis on breast cancer. Given that breast cancer is the 5th leading cause of death in women after heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and lung diseases (according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention), I would have figured the main women’s health campaign [...]

There is an interesting report from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) which provides a complex understanding of teen violence. See Teen Dating Violence: A Closer Look at Adolescent Romantic Relationships . The graphs partway down the page will spark your interest, but be sure to read the text to appreciate the complexity of the issue. [...]

  • Redpine commented on the blog post It Gets Better Campaign   3 years, 11 months ago · View

I don’t find the campaign title “It gets better”, offensive. It is a ray of hope. And Obama’s participation is both important and it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The US Department of State is warning schools that they need to address bullying. See http://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/some-student-bullying-may-violate-federal-law-education-department-says/27906 . As the article says, they have been looking at [...]

Glad to see you are including health care. I would sure like to see parents teaching their boys to access health care services better. Men access health care at half the rate as women and the results are staggering with men dieing around 5 years younger on average. We need to teach boys to take [...]

Interesting post. I think we have all been there. The bigger issue is what some are calling segregation by choice. First noted in schools, then universities, and of course neighborhoods and now many are noting it even to the point where entire cities are becoming bastions of a particular type of person. Do we cloister [...]

  • Good to know. Thanks for the response.

  • The author cites a survey instrument in which respondents self-select. If I remember my research methods course correctly, these surveys can be useful to assess what issues are out there and to characterize the issues (in this case street harassment), but cannot be used to determine the extent of the issue. This is because self-selected [...]

Some researchers have correlated early puberty with the absent father. (see guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/mar/28/early-puberty-absent-fathers ). If this is causal then that would suggest the importance of promoting more equally shared parenting especially after divorce to assist in more normal maturation. Thanks goddessjaz for the link Cristen Conger’s article about boys. That was the first information I’ve seen [...]

I didn’t think of it that way, but I will grant that it could be ironic.

I’ll take the recommendation for what it is and if I get a chance, I’ll check it out. Chicago is a great city. It would be worth a trip.

  • Redpine commented on the blog post Awesome feminist bookstore: Women & Children First   4 years, 1 month ago · View

Though this store sounds interesting — especially with its emphasis on service — it’s use of the old chivalrous standby “Women and Children First” as a name is unfortunate. It is a clear call for what some have termed “lifeboat feminism”, that is a contradictory feminism which demands equality while also demanding special privileges. If [...]

  • Redpine commented on the blog post Can I Get a Study on Stay at Home Dads, Please?   4 years, 1 month ago · View

“Where are the studies on the effects of men working? Where are the studies on the benefits of stay-at-home husbands?” I think these are very good questions. As the economy moved more and more men off the farm and into armies, mines, factories, and offices and away from their wives and children, the impact on [...]
