I’ve recently started riding my bike to work, which feels truly liberating.  But my rides are bringing me into contact with a group I’ve been trying to avoid for years: street catcallers.  My guess is that every woman has been verbally harassed like this at some point in her life, often on a regular basis.  As a resident [...]

Kate, I should have clarified in my comment. I was using worldwide statistics, not those just from the USA:

Erin, I think the issue here is the content of the school’s honor code. There aren’t many people left who will claim college students don’t have sex. BYU’s honor code is way behind the curve, and worse, it penalizes students for healthy expressions of sexuality. (I’m sure you realized this.) What this brings up in [...]

I comment occasionally on Feministing posts, usually driven by discontent at some anti-gay or misogynistic story you guys expose. But this is the first time I’m directing my discontent at the Feministing article itself. I think the article’s premise is fundamentally flawed Increasing recogniztion of gay relationships and, often, the desire for marriage is nothing [...]

StyleList has the story and a photo comparison of the actress at a red carpet event vs. on the cover. This is the second time [...]

Here’s an interesting article from VeloNews:
    http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/07/news/podiumgirl-reports-tales-from-le-podium-at-the-tour-de-france_131757

They interview one of the podium girls. It definitely sounds less derogatory than the NYT article, but it’s still an outdated tradition.

Certainly women who don’t like the way this works can choose not to participate. But that doesn’t mean it’s ok for something so sexist to exist, in the sports world or otherwise. The “so just don’t participate” argument is insulting. Women should not have to choose between being treated respectfully and being an object, an [...]

I am a big fan of professional cycling, and I have to say this is one of the “traditions” that makes me wish I wasn’t. It’s easy to forget how the sport has such an antiquated, boys club feel to it when you’re just watching, enjoying these incredible athletes. But like the cheerleaders in American [...]
