I can definitely relate to what you’re talking about. I’m also getting a B.A. in Gender Studies. Yes, I know there are really cool people that don’t identify as feminists. But that doesn’t mean that they’re not feminists. Actually saying the words, “I’m a feminist” is a pretty loaded thing to say. When it comes [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post We’re real women too   2 years, 10 months ago · View

Thank you for writing this. I’m 5’4″ and not totally sure what I weigh (less than 150 lbs, I’m guessing). The reason I don’t weigh myself is because I like my body how it is and if I see that number I’ll feel compelled to lower it. That said, it’s important for all women to [...]

I hope you’re all having a stupendous Tuesday after the long Labor Day weekend.  I have to admit, I really enjoyed not working on Labor Day (ironic, no?) Anyway, to the point.  I’ve recently started publishing some of my fiction work for the Kindle (check out “The Life and Times of Rebecca Walker” on Amazon [...]

I won’t be in the Richmond area, but a good friend of mine lives there so I’ve passed this along to her :)

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Wednesday Weigh-in: When did you discover your strength?   3 years, 2 months ago · View

I think I’m discovering my strength right now. I was raped 3 years ago and as I start talking about it and writing about it I can feel myself grow stronger.

  • Rachel commented on the blog post T J Maxx ad   3 years, 3 months ago · View

Thank you for writing about this! I’ve seen this ad and it also disturbs me. Mostly because of the whole “starving herself for designer clothes” thing. However, it’s also because this ad is targeting itself at my demographic (I’m 23) and I can’t afford anything, not even TJ Maxx prices. So what I want to [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Thoughts on Victim-Blaming   3 years, 3 months ago · View

Thank you for sharing your story, I know it can’t have been easy for you. I think that all victim-blaming is horrible and that people should stop doing it. However, I think that victim-blaming in the case of children is even more abhorant. As a 12-year-old how were you supposed to know what the flags [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Feministic approach to the gaming industry   3 years, 3 months ago · View

Definitely valid points. Another game that addresses sexuality is Mass Effect. The only problem I see is that sexuality only plays into the story when you choose to play femal, and then you can have sex with anyone you want. Mostly alien sex with female aliens. It doesn’t really get broader than that. Also, reading [...]

Sociological Imagies is now my second favorite blog (next to Feministing, of course!) I saw this graph the other day, but the reminder to love STEM women we know is always a good one. My sister, Shannon, is 17 and wants to go to the University of Minnesota for biomedical engineering. I am so impressed [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post I am not my hair   3 years, 4 months ago · View

You should do it! That would be awesome. Strange as it sounds, I’m not as paranoid about my legs as I am about my pubic hair (I know, tmi.) Seriously, nobody but me and my husband sees it, but because he can’t stand me being hairy down there it freaks me out when I get [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Gender Possibilities   3 years, 4 months ago · View

I think that the questions you posed right at the end are questions that a lot of people ask themselves. I actually read “Intersex (for lack of a better word)” just last semester for my Intro. to Gender Studies class and I’ve been trying to learn more about intersex people since then. I actually started [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Pro-CHOICE Does NOT Equal Pro-Abortion   3 years, 5 months ago · View

Thank you for posting this! I also really like your comment, “A lot of women don’t feel abortion is wrong at all, but it is not a choice they’d necessarily make for themselves.” That is exactly how I feel.

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Single Ladies and marriage today   3 years, 5 months ago · View

I just got married a little over 3 months ago, and what you are going through sounds SO familiar to me. So, hopefully what I have to say is helpful to you. I didn’t exactly want a wedding (mostly because I’m to lazy to plan something like that) and so my husband and I just [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Why I am a Latino feminist   3 years, 5 months ago · View

Awesome! Thank you for sharing your story =). I am not Latina (I’m almost as white as you can get, to be honest) but one of the best pieces I’ve ever read about feminism is called Becoming La Mujer by Marissa Navarro. It’s about a Latina woman coming to terms with being a lesiban and [...]

  • Rachel commented on the blog post The Sex Binary   3 years, 5 months ago · View

Agreed! I think the tricky thing is that we often don’t know how to not gender a child. I often wish we could just treat people like people without focusing on gendering them.

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Sometimes motherhood=abortion   3 years, 5 months ago · View

Thank you for writing this! Yet another reminder that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I know that’s a pretty corny cliche, but I think it fits the situation very well.

We’re going to miss you! But I’m definitely hoping to subscribe to Good (if funds allow, lol). And thank you for the encouragement to write, I always love it =).

  • Rachel wrote a new blog post: The Sex Binary   3 years, 5 months ago · View

There are two sexes.  We all know this, right?  We live in a society dominated by binaries.  You’re either sweet or sour; nice or mean; smart or stupid. We also have men and women.  It’s widely accepted that a person is either a man or a woman, boy or girl.  There are personality traits that [...]

I have a copy of this and I love it! It honestly helps me to not feel bad about my own sex life =).

  • Rachel commented on the blog post Joined in Feminist Matrimony   3 years, 5 months ago · View

I love you!!! I know Jessica just said that, but I really felt the need to exclaim it again. I also love being married, and even though it’s probably not going to be financially viable I would love to be a full-time homemaker. The point is that it’s my choice.
