AJ commented on the blog post What can we do about feminism’s brand problem? 1 month ago · View
I tend to think that this problem has more to do with the fact that everyone is willing to say “Yes of course people of all genders should be treated equally and fairly,” but criticizing masculinity and male privilege are much more uncomfortable things to do, because that is simply the nature of privilege is [...]

AJ commented on the blog post Michelle Obama on gun violence, opportunity and possibility 1 month, 1 week ago · View
It’s good, but… yes, I could love Michelle Obama more if she’d knock off the fat-shaming. I’m not sure how much of an asset to the feminist movement she can really be considered while she regards obesity as the greatest threat faced by our nation.

I certainly do not celebrate Thatcher’s death, but let’s not pretend she was an ally.

“Petticoat Rule” should be a blog title.

Warning, probably triggers for just about everything short of explicit rape talk.

This is one of the most disgusting things ever. I wish someone would blow a hole in this. (I’ve been told he skims off the negative comments so maybe don’t bother.) But this made me too angry not to share while grinding my teeth.

AJ commented on the blog post Quick hit: Obama named TIME 2012 Person of the Year 5 months ago · View
An awful lot of people, including children, have died and continue to die horrible deaths as a direct and predictable result of Obama’s choices and policies. The US (or at least Time) is rather selective about which children’s violent pointless deaths are outrageous tragedies and which are business as usual.

For a little perspective, some might want to check out the blog of Liza Long, the woman who wrote the now viral “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother.” The below URL is to a brief criticism and several of her more alarming excerpts, but links to the blog itself as well. In short… this woman has [...]

AJ commented on the blog post Edmonton’s new rape prevention ads should be everywhere 5 months ago · View
All word definitions are subjective. In this case, it seems most appropriate to defer to survivors of rape to say what rape is and is not. Some would definitely consider rape to be sex (this has nothing to do with it being “good” or “okay” or in anyway mitigating its awfulness — sometimes the “Rape [...]

AJ commented on the blog post Edmonton’s new rape prevention ads should be everywhere 5 months, 2 weeks ago · View
It’s a strong campaign, but as I think I’ve said before, I take issue with the whole “rape is not sex” thing even though I know it’s a fashionable definition right now. My main objection is that some survivors of rape most certainly construe their experience as sex, and trying to define it for them [...]

AJ commented on the blog post How to write a trend piece on gender relations for Fox News 5 months, 3 weeks ago · View
The “serious” social issue Venker is addressing can be boiled down to this: some men don’t like the way some women act, and some women are not necessarily willing to change themselves to be as attractive as possible to as many men as possible. O, horror! I really love the stock photo though. “Cripes, get [...]

AJ commented on the blog post Weekly Feminist Reader: Open Thread 5 months, 4 weeks ago · View
A Suzanne Venker recently wrote this little gem for Fox News about how if women go around being all feminist they’re never going to get a good man — gee, what an original (and helpful, and accurate) thought, right? Would be more fun if there was a place for comments on the article, but there [...]

AJ commented on the blog post Rape is not sex 8 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I appreciate the point being made here, but I take exception for one reason: I don’t think it’s my place or anyone else’s to tell survivors of rape what rape is and is not. It’s certain that some of them have perceived their nonconsensual sexual experiences as sex nonetheless — my greatest fear would be [...]
