Then again, Mel Gibson’s (ex-?) wife is Russian. I remember seeing no end of mail-order bride jokes and variants of “Russian whore”. Taylor Swift is pretty much America’s Sweetheart.
Not to take away from the rest of what you’re saying. I agree.

The only place “Enjoy the Silence” belongs is as a title of a Depeche Mode song. Ugh.

I’m just not impressed by her transphobia. I should add, though, that my personal hang-up doesn’t mean that she never had anything important or interesting to say and that nobody should read her work. Also, I know her opinion wasn’t unique in second-wave feminism.

Beautiful. I know that when I was a child and found out what “gay” was, it didn’t cause my poor little brain to explode. It merely expanded on the definition of love that I already knew.

Had to comment on this just for the Anastasia Krupnik mention. She and her books are so underrated! Of course, Madeline and the Paper Bag Princess were awesome, too.
I also like your interpretation of the Carole King song.

That’s an interesting interpretation (and you definitely make some good points), but I’m going to have to agree with Ms. Brown. Incidentally, looking up the linguistic origins of the word “passion” (with roots in words meaning “destruction” and “to harm” among others), I sort of wonder how it even came to have more positive connotations.

That’s a real shame to hear (or read, rather). I thought D:TNG did a good job with their other rape storylines, especially Paige’s. This stuff with Holly J and Declan is just ew.

What you said. I have absolutely zero interest in working with anti-choicers and I don’t believe that to be an unreasonable position at all.

Aw, Jesus, they had us do some like this in my freshman year of high school (about seven years ago). In health class, my teacher had an abstinence-only motivational speaker come in to talk to us (at the behest of the school, I’m sure—our teacher actually made certain we knew about all forms of contraception [...]

Ugh, I really hate that, too. People don’t even think about it when they put it that way; how wrong it sounds. Same with “got murdered”, “got beaten”, etc..
